After living in western PA about an hour east of Pittsburgh for almost 2 1/2 years, I'd NEVER want to live in Pittsburgh
See, from this it sounds like you never actually lived *in Pittsburgh*, just rural Western PA. I've lived and worked within the city limits for almost 8 years and I know all kinds of people from all kinds of places-- 90% of my friends and co-workers aren't originally from here. I'm sure there is provincialism, but I don't see it on a regular basis, on the contrary. Sure, the economy isn't great, but the social and cultural resources in a city this size make Pittsburgh a diamond in the rough.

So, you didn't really live in Pittsburgh, huh?
I grew up "about an hour east of Pittsburgh" and I can testify to the fact that they are two different world. Rural Western PA is very, very different than Pittsburgh.
also has a better economy and is much closer to many, many other interesting places, including big cities (Washington, Philadelphia, New York) than Pittsburgh is.
PS. Pittsburgh is closer to Chicago, Toronto, Niagra, Cleveland, Cincinatti, Detroit, and Columbus. Shall we compare? And Pittsburgh is STILL only 7 hours or less from NYC, Philidelphia, DC, and Baltimore. Pittsburgh is completely centrally located to make a TON of weekend trips to ANY of those places.
Can Baltimore claim the same?
I'm sorry, I just really hate Baltimore. I think it's gross. LOL.
I would choose Baltimore. Their is much more to do in Baltimore then Pittsburgh, although I love Pittsburgh as well, it feels like a big town, and Baltimore feels like a big city.
Pittsburgh. Friendlier people, much lower crime rate, much lower cost of living. Just as much culture, but smaller and more laid back. Pittsburgh is almost Midwestern, while Baltimore is pure East Coast, a lot more like Philly.

They are both very comparable cities.

So you are comparing a town an hour away from Pittsburgh which likely would not even be suburban to Mount Vernon or Fells Point?
Yeah I would make the same choice.
To put it another way, yes Baltimore offers a lot more than Cumberland.
As does Pittsburgh, but that's an hour away from where you lived.
Baltimore hands down but I do like Pittsburgh so I don't want to offend. But, considering where Baltimore was and what has become of it, I really can't think of a city that has made more progress. It's biggest issue is crime where Pittsburgh wins hands down. But, Baltimore just has a lot more to offer and it has so many great neighborhoods that do not have crime issues.
"A lot more" to offer? Where do you get that? I like Baltimore, but that's a pretty groundless statement. I don't feel like listing all the world-class museums and other cultural offerings, outdoor recreation, and general quality of life we have here, but they're at least comparable. I suspect Pittsburgh probably wins in a "more to offer" contest, though, especially for a city with not even half the population of Baltimore. Or maybe you were talking about football teams?

Actually, the economy is pretty great, relative to most of the rest of the country.
Edit- and to the other poster above, Baltimore does NOT have a "better economy".
Edit edit- maybe it does, but that's due to the proximity of the Feds and that's not really anything to be proud of.

I live near Pittsburgh & I've spent time in Baltimore....There's only one place that I thought was nice in Baltimore ( nice to look at ) the Inner Harbor, but it was a lot of over priced food & drink....The rest of the city did nothing for me...
I was warned by several locals ( bartenders, clerks, etc. ) not to go into a couple areas if I didn't want to wind up missing or dead....Makes you feel right at home.....Besides that, they have that Ravens team that just pleaded with the NFL not to schedule so many games in Pittsburgh cause they tend to lose there...
What Moderator cut: inappropriate language!!!......How could you have any pride & live in a town like that ???
