I thought some of these images were cool and worth sharing. They truly show how dense some cities (Chicago) and how sprawled other cities (Atlanta) are and how other cities (Houston) fall right in between the two.
These images leave no doubt to anyone's mind that Atlanta's sprawl might be the worst in the nation. Even if it does have a true urban core, Phoenix appears to be more cohesive from space.
You can see clearly where development ends and the Everglades begins and notice how the grid continues up the length of the entire metro Miami/SF area for 100 miles. The sparsely lit area SW of Miami is mainly farmland.
What is "The Metroplex"? Never heard that term before, and I can't tell from the picture.
I'd never heard of that either, not sure why it isn't referred to by the cities' actual names. At any rate, the Metroplex definitely isn't as well known as the Twin Cities.
Dallas/Fort Worth is fairly commonly known as the Metroplex. Although it's prolly more nationally known as DFW or Dallas or whatever. Just as if the OP would have referred to Phoenix as "The Valley of the Sun" would have created confusion outside of those not familiar with the Southwest.

Don't want to derail the thread, but it isn't that common, at least myself and one other poster were oblivious. Also never heard of the Valley of the Sun either. Cool pictures nonetheless.

I don't live in Dallas and have never visited the area, but I knew DFW is commonly referred to as the Metroplex. I've heard "Valley of the Sun" for Phoenix, but not very often.

Its kinda like saying the Inland Empire, Chicagoland, or Twin Cities. Its just a nickname for its metro area.
It refers to the cities of Dallas & Fort Worth, most commonly heard by its international airport's name of D/FW.
The two cities downtowns are exactly 30 miles apart. They are linked together economically as one.
