Now I cant say Seattle will have the greatest change in there downtown but it will be interesting to follow then the next few years. Seattle is going over a waterfront redevelopment project, building an extention to the Convention center, amazon towers are coming in, alot of projects stalled in 2008 are getting revived. A new NBA/NHL arena in the sodo district will spark a development overhaul for that area. There is alot of mixed yse properties, high rises and alot of business and stores moving in.

Seattle is going through some dramatic changes. Seattle was the fastest growing large city in the USA in 2013. In three years between 2010 and 2013 Seattle gained 43,745 residents and 69% of that was downtown . Downtown is adding 10,000 residents a year in 6 years at current population growth downtown will reach 150,000 residents. Puget Sound Business Journal reports today downtown Seattle has over 100 projects under construction about to break ground or completed since 2013. Emporis reports 20 towers currently under construction Downtown Seattle with another 20 planned. Seattle also currently 3.2 million square ft. of office space under construction downtown reported by the Business Journal also. Downtown Seattle transportation is changing big time . With One completed Street car line and one more line opening next year and a third line funded by the federal gov. Also three Light rail lines in different stages of construction . And one line is being built as a light subway line all underground. Some of the major projects going on in Seattle are .

The Amazon world Campus three 40 story towers and three 10 story biospheres with jungle in them.

Yessler Terrace Redevelopment 5,000 new housing units, 900,000 square ft of office , 98,000 sq. ft. of retail and 15.9 acres of urban park.

The convention center 750 million dollar expansion.

The Seattle Aquarium 250 million dollar expansion.

Pike Place Market expansion 65 million dollars

The Waterfront Redevelopment and putting freeway underground witch also includes new two mile waterfront park 4 billion +

The Omni Group Times development 1500 new residences in three towers and 43,000 sq. ft. of retail.

The North Lot 3 towers .

There is more I was just listing some of the mega projects going on downtown. Over a 100 projects.

Atlanta's Huge 2014 Forecast SEE ONEALL

PONCE CITY MARKET The city's favorite large-scale reclamation project is slated to open this fall, with at least two tenants — the Suzuki School and Binders Art Supplies — looking at August debuts. Roughly a dozen other tenants have signed up for restaurant or office space, and the development's residential leasing office opened last week, promising impressive but pricey living.

WEBSITE

BUCKHEAD ATLANTA Last we heard, the first phase of Buckhead's swanky new mixed-use development was scheduled for a July 7 opening. Initial offerings will include Georgia's first Shake Shack and at least nine other restaurants, as well as plenty of high-end retail. It's a new district atop a nightlife graveyard.

ATLANTA STREETCAR Much of the construction is finished on the 2.7-mile Phase I stretch of the Atlanta Streetcar project, which has been in the works since at least 2003. Passenger service on the figure-eight track — which stretches from Centennial Olympic Park to the Martin Luther King Jr. Historical Site, meeting in the middle at Woodruff Park — is slated for a summer-ish start. Or a little later.

ATLANTA FALCONS STADIUM Originally pegged for a groundbreaking in March, the start date for ATL's controversial new football stadium is a little foggy at the moment. The main hurdles — those two pesky churches — have been cleared, and plenty of legal land-mines remain, but this thing's going to get done sooner than later. By 2017, we'll have the pleasure of seeing an Origami Death Star Stadium every time we venture downtown.
1 GEORGIA DOME DRIVE NORTHWEST, ATLANTA, GA 30313

NATIONAL CENTER FOR CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS Slated for a May opening, the distinctive 42,000 square-foot building will be "dedicated to exploring stories of civil and human rights in dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces." It's downtown on Centennial Olympic Park, next door to the (new) World of Coke and the Georgia Aquarium. Also years in the making.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME This 94,000 square-foot ode to the South's greatest tradition — a transplant from South Bend, Ind. — is slated to open its doors to the public just in time for Labor Day weekend. That's the first weekend of the college football season, if you didn't already know.

BELTLINE EXTENSIONS, ENHANCEMENTS A number of individual projects are scheduled to be either started or finished this year, including: the Edgewood Avenue Bridge (which reopened April 1); the Eastside Trail Gateway, which will link to Historic Fourth Ward Park and should be finished this summer; and the Westside Trail, a three-mile stretch from Washington Park to Adair Park that will break ground in "the second half of 2014." Also, construction on the leg from Irwin Street to Memorial Drive should crank up this year.
660 IRWIN STREET NORTHEAST, ATLANTA, GA 30312

KROG STREET MARKET The significantly smaller, epicurean answer to Ponce City Market, KSM is on track for a late July opening. The former home of Tyler Perry Studios, the nine-acre site currently has about 18 restaurant tenants on the books — as well as some already-signed, unannounced leases and three open spots.

INMAN QUARTER The Project Formerly Known As 280 Elizabeth St. technically broke ground in 2013 and won't be fully complete until January 2015, but this year will be big nonetheless. The $46 million mixed-used development in Inman Park will include 200 luxury apartments, high-end retail and several restaurants. Those include leases with chef Ford Fry, Bartaco and MF Sushi. Expect apartments and some retail as early as September.

131 PONCE, MIDTOWN This overhaul of legendary architect IM Pei's first building is still on track to open this summer. A 280-unit apartment project on the site of the former Gulf Oil Building, it'll engulf most of a city block — flanked by Ponce de Leon, North and Piedmont avenues, as well as Juniper Street — in the heart of Midtown. The facade will live on as designed by Pei, who was the man behind that big glass pyramid outside the Louvre and much more.

This is a perfect example as to what is happening in DTLA. This old historic building laid vacant for years and years.
Update: AEG Leases Entire Desmond Building, Will Add Over 500 Employees to South Park in Downtown LA | DTLA RISING

Of course they are building the new hotels, apt/condos and other towers, but stuff like this is awesome and is drasticly changing the face of DTLA.

Austin, it has 5 high rise apartments being built and 2 residential skyscrapers being built, and a Mariott hotel in the heart of downtown. I don't know which one out of the poll choices though...

Anyway!...

I understand how the Jewelry District tends to deactivate street life because the businesses close in the evening. I would though hate to see the district flee downtown despite having shrunk because of the recession. Precious metals and gems will always be an important retail sector. You don't want to lose any economic diversity.

Would it be possible for developers to consign the second floor to design showhouses? That would free the street level for nightlife and the second floor can shut down without affecting it. Perhaps that would actually be more secure for businesses that deal with precious commodities.
