I don't get why people keep bringing up name recognition... neither the title of the thread nor the OP mention name recognition at all... it is a completely separate issue....

No one is arguing that Memphis is not bigger or more well known. A better indicator of popularity might be people moving into the metro.
For what it's worth, the website Movoto just declared Knoxville to be the most "exciting" city in TN - based on factors such as nightclubs, restaurants, entertainment venues and cultural resources. On a per capita basis of course. It could be they counted Knoxville's city population and Davidson County's population (metro government) - not an accurate comparison.
Memphis and Nashville are the most popular cities in Tennessee hands down.
Most people outside of TN doesn't even know anything about Knoxville to include the fact that UT is located there.
That is interesting... because I live outside TN and I love Knoxville for it's urban build, location, vibe, etc... and I do not like Memphis for the same reasons. I have no interest in UT, far more interests in the mountains and Old City.
In the last 14 years, Knoxville blows Memphis away in population growth by percentage. Heck, between 2000 and 2010, Memphis lost population.

If I had to choose between visiting one of the two, I'd go with Knoxville mostly based on access to the mountains which is an area I'd much rather explore than the Delta region.

Of course it blows it away by percentage. Its much smaller than the Memphis area.
