NYC is a rich, powerful city, but it has very little cultural influence compared to Los Angeles (and CA as a whole). People mistake wealth and power as influence, and it’s not the same thing. Their one influencer was print media, but that industry has been diluted and disrupted by a variety of online sources.
Los Angeles, because of the entertainment industry. Film/TV is the greatest American cultural influencer and it reaches beyond the country as well. Our lifestyles and our awareness of ourselves are shaped through our absorption through content of film and tv (because no one reads books anymore).
Bay area also has more influence than NYC too, because Silicon Valley changes the way we interact with each other due to technology.
NYC’s role, if anything, is that they’re good at filtering and curating trends coming from Europe.
Im leaning towards NYC of course but i don't want to be bias because the Los Angeles influence is definitely there so i think it's best to break down different categories.
Social Media / T.v + Film - L.A or S.F
Buisness - NYC
Financial power - NYC
Sports - Toss-up
Music - Tough one but slightly L.A due to Hollywood
Diversity among different ethnicities - NYC
Foriegn impact - Another tough one
Street gangs - L.A
Hip hop scene - NYC
Transportation - NYC
Global impact - NYC
Tourism - NYC
Entertainment - L.A
Graffiti - Toss-up
Nightlife - NYC
Food - Tie
Museum - NYC
Theater - L.A
Outdoor - L.A
Weather + Scenery - L.A
Video game industry - L.A
Like i said it's a good question if there's no bias involved.

LOL, what the fruit?! Why'd you include street gangs?
Transportation/Logistics is SO important. You gave the nod to NYC, which is right, but that category should be worth 10x that of every other category. LA is a logistical nightmare. It's difficult to meet women due to the absence of foot traffic but when you do, they typically live 30-90 minutes from you. NYC is a breeze with the elite walkability and 24/7 public transit.

When I'm thinking about moving I always think about what city has the best street gangs.
