There are only five industries where NYC plays second fiddle to Los Angeles and those are entertainment (but not media in general), aerospace (though LA lost a lot of ground to DC on this), port shipping, video games and automotive (though LA has been losing this to the South).

All of those have some presence in NYC, and pretty much all other industries are strongly in NYC's favor especially banking and financial services.

One thing to add is that every single one of the four major sports leagues have their headquarters in NYC.

Much of the argument for LA hinge on pretty surface level things which are meant to catch your eye (such as entertainment in Hollywood), but is missing the larger picture. Banking, financial services, accounting, insurance, professional services, etc. which are woven into the very basic fabric of modern living and the modern economy aren't eye-catching but are instead so ubiquitous that people don't realize how important they are. Sure, there are also eye-catching parts of NYC's influence such as with media in general, such as the burgeoning journalism industry, fashion, architecture, music and fine art, but those are an important but smaller part of the massive coverage of industry sectors that NYC covers.
