Really closed minded rationale. Just because New York is a hub for finance that means it has the most power? An industry that almost got shaken to the ground 5 years ago because of bad decisions?

Every city has banking and finance influence. LA is number 6 for insurance. But, excuse me, that can't be possible with only weirdos living here, right? The Nation’s Strongest Metros For Finance & Insurance Jobs | EMSI | Economic Modeling Specialists Intl.
....the industry almost got shaken to the ground and the United States government had no choice other than to bail it out or else the country would have gone up in flames and we would still be in a depression. The entire world went into a recession because of Wall Street. That's power and influence. What in Los Angeles is of enough importance that its demise would yield similar catastrophic ripple effect on the world? Nothing.

And back-office employment has nothing to do with influence and power. Of course, there are many back office finance jobs in areas like Salt Lake City and Charlotte, but they aren't the influencers. Similarly, Silicon Valley outsources lower-end jobs outside of Silicon Valley, but it doesn't mean Nevada is the tech capital of the world either, now does it?

There is a reason NY and LA are in completely different leagues when it comes to corporations, wealth and billionaire residents.

Billionaires
NYC: 114
LA: 20

Number of corporations with a market capitalization of $5 Billion+ and their aggregate market cap, 10/19/2012:
1-New York, United States: 84 companies, $2.923 Trillion
2-San Francisco, United States: 49 companies, $2.313 Trillion
3-Houston, United States: 36 companies, $768.49 Billion
4-Chicago, United States: 31 companies, $669.45 Billion
5-Boston, United States: 25 companies, $409.12 Billion

Los Angeles isn't even in the top 5, despite it being nearly tied to greater New York in population. New York holds the power. Even the biggest studios of Los Angeles are simply subsidiaries of New York corporations.

Who cares about New York State? Or states for that matter? This thread is about cities.
New York City has by far the biggest population of any city in the country and it will never ever be surpassed, unless the city is wiped away by a catastrophic disaster.

NYC will also always be influential because it's the financial capital of the world. Money is of greater influence than ghetto Atlanta rappers, or whatever silly thing went through your head to make you think Atlanta is somehow "influential".

London is also still at the top. It hasn't gone anywhere. If anything, New York and London are doubling-down as the Alpha dogs of the world, with the unprecedented flows of international money pouring into these two cities.

Time to do some reading.

You pretty much lost credibility with that statement. While I certainly would not agree that Atlanta ranks among the top 5 most influential cities in the U.S., it has a bit more going on than a few "ghetto rappers" in the way of influence. Atlanta is also more influential than Houston in not only the South but the U.S.

Too busy being the world capital of media & entertainment to worry about finance. Nothing influential or anything.

NYC has a bigger stranglehold on Finance, than LA does on Entertainment and Media. NYC is the home of News Corp, 21 Century Fox, Viacom, Time Warner, CBS.

Where's LA?
So the same New Yorker's who had the most power and influence in finance made a crash and had to go cry to Obama to bail them out. You make it sound like it's a good thing.

I don't know what your beef with LA is (especially with you living in Dallas, good lord) but you're bordering on irrational here.

LA is still a baby compared to NYC. Tough comparison. I'd like to see how they compare in 100 years though. Too bad I'll (we'll) be dead.

The biggest Influence is out West little kids,Been that way since California surpassed N.y as a state in the 60s.Plus California is in talks of being it's own country it's so powerful. By itself has the 7th or 8th biggest economy on earth.

And both cities & state play a huge part in the world, If New york was in Arkansas or L.A in Alabama nobody would care but Los Angeles is located in the top dog of the nation, The biggest melting pot in the America by far,Once the high speed rail is complete and Los Angeles is Connected to San Francisco to Vegas to Diego i would like to see how that influences the country.

Now let's get down to N.y.c,it's a city combined by 5 counties or boroughs to even have that population & economy, In another thread i already broke down how each N.y borough on it's own are not Alpha world cities except for Manhattan, Imagine if Los Angeles combined as multiple counties to make 1 city lol,No contest little kid, And it's not even funny how small N.y.c is compared to L.A at it's core, But let's give credit to N.y.c for being a powerhouse for years and years but now that time is over,I visit New york now and see the locals with no pride claiming Los Angeles street gangs and you seriously wanna know who has more influence lmfao foh small inferior kid....

California cant even find enough water to support its crops, let alone be its own country. California is top dog for now but Texas is making a big run for it, population wise. New York is also very diverse in fact I believe Queens county is the most diverse county in the nation. What are you talking about when you say you broke down every borough and on their own are not a Alpha world city ? Brooklyn by its self would be the third or fourth largest city in the US on its own. How would LA be if it was split into different parts ? Would LA be a world class city if it loss Hollywood ? What do you mean NYC is small at its core compared to LA ? LA has a tiny downtown comparable to a smaller city like Dallas. When i was in downtown LA i was surprised on how small the skyline was, maybe it was hiding in the smog ? And about the street gang thing, yeah stupidity is everywhere....

EDIT: I love LA And NYC, and just about every big US city, except Tulsa
