I know that averages may not look TOO far off between the two, but the situation on the ground in each is quite a bit different. Boston winters frequently get very cold with a good amount of snow- the landscape turns brown and looks "dead" as much of the north/northeast does that time of year. Portland on the other hand, remains green with weather that truly almost always stays around the averages- rarely getting below freezing even at night, so it's cool but mild most of the winter.
Summer in Portland has very low humidity and temperatures that for the most part stay in the mid to upper 70's, whereas Boston will frequently be warmer and more humid than that.
Lots of sunny days in the winter in Boston - cold, yes - but many sunny days. I'm here from upstate New York, land of the perpetually gray sky; starts in October and continues through April. Biggest difference in weather was much more sun and snow was more predictable - although we can take quite a dumping with a Norester (and they don't clear the roads here as well or fast as they did in Upstate NY, where it just constantly snows!)
