Yeah, most of the big schools aren't in big cities. Also, it would get tricky with schools who's campus is in one city but play in a stadium in another (UCLA, U. of Miami)

There's a big three, not a big four. NFL, NBA, and MLB are the big sports leagues in the U.S. NHL is regional (and has tiny television viewership) and MLS is still in its infancy.
The Revenue of the NY Rangers is ~$220M according to Forbes, the WHOLE MLS is about 500M.
No they are not even close to equal.
On Twitter the Boston Bruins have 1M followers, the New England Revolution have 81K followers, and the Providence Bruins (AHL) have 34K Followers. The Rochester Americans (AHL) have 49K Followers.
Can you tell me how the MLS is on the level of the NHL? When it seems its more in line with its minor league affiliates.
The NHL has pretty small national numbers, but like Baseball the more games there are the less people watch national telecasts, they watch on RSNs.
Look at NESN's banner, they don't even have a Revolution banner.

nor does the Boston Herald

And NHL is terrible on tv. Just because the NHL has bad TV ratings doesn't mean people don't follow it. I personally love the NHL and go to games all the time, but I can't stand watching it on TV.

I would say that the US has five major league sports leagues now and in some parts of the country, you could even consider Lacrosse as another major league.
In Upstate NY the NLL (indoor Lacrosse) is a big deal, Buffalo draws about 16K people a game, Rochester Draws about 8,000. I was surprised how popular indoor lacrosse is considering I didn't think it was a thing until I came out to WNY.

If you don't like MLS, just subtract the teams from your list.

Almost all of the stadiums for these teams are in cities. The New England Patriots, New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls, New York Islanders, and Buffalo Bills play in Towns. The Chicago Fire play in a village. The New York Giants and New York Jets play in a borough. The Washington Redskins play in unincorporated Prince George's County.

The list as of Nov. 1st, 2014:

5 Team Cities
New York, NY (MLBx2, NBAx2, NHL) In 2015, will go to 7 with the Islanders moving to Brooklyn and a new MLS team in the Bronx.
Chicago, IL (NFL, MLBx2, NBA, NHL)

4 Team Cities
Denver (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL)
Houston, TX (NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS)
Los Angeles (MLB, NBAx2, NHL)
Philadelphia, PA (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL)
Toronto, ON (MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS)
Washington, DC (MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS)

If you have any corrections or know of any teams moving or expansion teams, please post-
Los Angeles has an MLS team in the LA Galaxy.

The Galaxy play in Carson. The new team will play in a new soccer stadium on the site of the old Sports Arena next to the Coliseum. The Galaxy will continue to play in Carson.

For changes since 2014, 1 NFL, 1 MLB, 1 NHL, and 1 MLS have changed cities. There have been 4 expansion MLS teams. In the next 3 years, there will be 1 more MLS and 1 new NHL expansion teams that have been confirmed granted, and 1 more MLS team (Miami) that has been conditionally granted. 2 NBA teams will move back to the primary city in their metro. 1 MLS team will move from a temporary stadium setup in Minneapolis to a permanent one in St. Paul. The Rams will move to their permanent stadium in Inglewood. Things still up in the air Chargers and Raiders. The Chargers will likely move to LA next year and then to a permanent stadium in Inglewood in 2019. The Raiders are a little more up in the air, but somewhere in Clark County, NV currently looks most likely.

MLS is about 1/5 the size of the NHL in net worth. Avg attendance may be similar but the MLS gives away a lot of tickets for practically nothing, and they play far fewer games than the NHL meaning total attendance ias far less. Hockey tickets are expensive. there are always people boosting soccer and bashing hockey but the money tells the story.

Its blatantly obvious if you look at common markets. Boston, Chicago, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Philadelphia, Dallas, LA all have Hockey teams that are much bigger deals than their respective MLS teams.
Heck in Boston the Beanpot and Hockey East College tournaments have more hype than anything to do with the Revs.
The only place where is might be close is Columbus.
