The Mayor said he has a handle on the situation. We all feel much better now.

Baltimore is on St. Louis heels....They may make Murder Capitol for the first time. Can't have all these murders all these years without winning the title at some point.
Washington has 82 murders, up from 68 this time last year...
Richmond has 20 murders, down from 23 this time last year...
Norfolk has 12 murders, down from 19 this time last year...

It also has about the most perfect location you can find.....It's far enough south to have a relatively mild winter, but is still far enough North to have driving access to DC, Philly, NYC etc....
There was a discussion here a few months ago, in the RVA vs NOLA thread, where people asserted that a person would pick Rich over NO because Rich is "safe". This was an absurd notion to me, because everywhere I've been on the East Coast, people with even a basic understanding of street crime knew about Richmond. And historically, Richmond is right with NO, if even slightly behind, as one of the most dangerous, violent cities in this country's history...
People on this site tend to try to disprove the similarities and connections between DC and Rich. Those similarities are real in many arenas; the criminal underworld is another link the two cities have long shared. Maybe you have to be from both areas, as I am, or just have a more intimate knowledge of street crime in both cities. Regardless, DC has always been a big supplier of Richmond drugs, Rich has always been a big supplier of DC guns, and with the two cities being only 100 miles apart, there are many people in both cities who have mixed into the street life of the other one...
If you compare murder rates, it is overall nearly identical in both cities, 1980-2010. In fact, DC's peak himicide rate in 1991 is exactly the same as Richmond's peak murder rate in 1994! Both were particularly gruesome from 1990-1997, and a larger period of heightened murders from 1987-2005....
To my point at hand, Richmond has come such a long way, as has The City, so it's no wonder that both of these cities began gentrifying around the same time (mid-00s), and that both of these cities are seeing historic growth and rebirth that neither have witnessed in well over 60 years...
It's a testament to how much improved Richmond is that even today, (as in recent years post-2008), while the city still has murder and violent crime rates compared to Chicago, it is considered "safe" to some. Anybody from here knows that historically there are blocks and neighborhoods in Rich just as bad or even worse than hoods in major cities. And historically, Chicago's peak murder rate (1992) is not even close to Richmond's 1994 peak. And historically, anyone with an affinity for these types of stats and research can clearly see Richmond was a worse city for a longer period in any era...
I just used Chi to draw comparison. It's amazing when one of the most violent cities in U.S. History has reinvigorated its reputation and is on the way to being known for more than crime and the Confederacy. #RVArising!

very true. Based on how it is right now baltimore would still have to get significantly worse to catch up to St. Louis. Baltimore 29 per 100k . St. Louis 34 per 100k. (July 27)

Not to get off topic, but Richmond seems to be fairly well known in the black community in general. Many American-born black people in the cities of the northeast corridor have relatives in Richmond. Since I've been in the Chi, I've also found that many black people here have heard of or been to Richmond, whereas it's typically the opposite for white people. Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal but whatevs.
