For someone in their 20s eager to get out and conquer the world, I'd think Chicago is the best choice here. Go to Charleston once you're sick of city life and ready to retire.
Not sure how any young person chooses Chicago over Charleston. Weather alone, plus the beach.
So you think all young people are beach bums?
Young people choose Chicago for tons of reasons, first and foremost because it offers way more in the way of jobs and professional opportunities. That comes with being a metro area over ten times larger than Charleston.
Chicago no doubt has more jobs but that does not mean anything if a person doesn't get a job offer there. The best city for jobs is always the one where a person gets a job offer.
I don't get the appeal of Chicago or any cold weather place, and more people doesn't make a place better to live, especially from traffic standpoint. Chicago probably also has higher cost of living despite not being near the beach.

Yes but Chicago has a ton more jobs, and that's why it attracts more people in general. It's not rocket science.

"Better" is subjective, but there are lots of people out there that don't mind cold weather. And Chicago is right on Lake Michigan and has a beach:
my point is that it isn't worthwhile to talk about cities in terms of jobs, because an individual is not guaranteed a good job or the job they want in any city including Chicago.
I understand Chicago has a beach on the lake. Is it worth the bone chilling cold most of the year to be near that lake beach though.
obviously there are a lot of people who prefer a big city. but a warmer city gives people the opportunity to get outside nearly year round.

Most young people would choose Chicago over Charleston....... Weird statement. Charleston gives off a conservative old retired type of feel to me which most young people like myself don't like.

You have not provided proof of that assertion.
I think most young people prefer being near the beach, and warmer weather. I see a lot of people of all ages in Charleston. My opinion, Charleston is a more unique city than Chicago.
If you want to live in a metro that is nearly 100 percent liberal, then Chicago is the way to go. But most young people aren't that liberal.
