I see someone voted for SF. SF is good if you don't plan on making it big. There are quite a few underground venues, but in comparison to Chicago, not even close.
True, but can you name a Chicago house producer from this millennium? There's nothing fresh coming to the table. It's the same old DJs spinning a mix of old Chicago house and new stuff from the UK. Very little actual music being produced in Chicago today besides hip-hop and EDM.

You did say underground though. When I think of underground SmartBar comes to mind. When I think of a house producer from this millennium that I can name by name, they're most likely going through The Mid or saving themselves for SAMF or Lolla. If you're looking to be a local DJ surrounded by people with the same interests, Chicago is the best place. However, if you do want to make it big to the point where, like you say, I could name the DJ, the only places for that are London, Miami, and LA, IMO. And honestly, if you have the funds or can make connections, London is much more underground than anywhere in the U.S. SF DJs never make it big. LA DJs strive for celebrity status. Miami DJs are cliquey and Latin based mainly (which I love that sound, but it's a unique market that requires being in Miami). Chicago has the best actual underground scene in terms of showing up to a random club and discovering a new DJ you love. London, though, has the Chicago vibe in terms of residency and style of house music, but it comes with the possibility of stardom of LA unlike SF and Chicago. But in LA, I can tell you from growing up there, it's often the same resident DJs at most clubs every night of the week.

Chicago-local scene with heavy underground/non-mainstream influence, hard to make it big, but many venues to get into
SF-local scene but much smaller pool of clubs to play in being a smaller city and virtually no chance of making it big since SF isn't much known for its mainstream music scene (recently The Cataracs are the only big "EDM" name coming from there that I can think of)
LA-good for making it big if that's your goal, but being LA, competition is much higher and you will be forced to conform to mainstream sound
London-Chicago/SF underground vibe which allows you to be original in your sound, but with the possibility of making it big like LA DUE TO your original sounds

The youngest act mentioned is Orchard Lounge, starting in 2001.

Denver. Denver. Denver. Did I mention Denver?

there are dozens and dozens of hole on the wall clubs 7 days a week that play live house, dubjstep, jamtronica music here. Not to mention the #1 outdoor concert venue in the country, Red Rocks amphitheater. all the big name house and electronic guys play here in the summer.

And the legal weed sure helps fuel that particular community/scene as well
