Looking to move out of Chicago for many reasons, one reason being the music scene. While Chicago boasts a healthy underground dance music scene, you have to either Know a Guy or be world famous to break in. The nepotism prevents young talent from getting any spotlight, which is why you see resident DJs in their 30's, 40's, even 50's. They won't budge for the younger generations.
I've been researching underground dance music scenes in different cities across the US, and I've come up with a list of the ones that seem to be the top. What do you think?
Chicago is the birthplace of house music, so sorry, but you won't find much better than there. The second best option is LA since that's where most new headline DJs come from (along with the UK and Netherlands). Chicago is best for underground. LA is best for trying to make it big. I see someone voted for SF. SF is good if you don't plan on making it big. There are quite a few underground venues, but in comparison to Chicago, not even close.
The above poster is right - Chicago is the birthplace of house music. Nepotism in your industry is in EVERY city - nobody wants to budge for the younger generations.... that's the whole point!
To be frank, your best option would be to go to Europe. If you can afford traveling there and know anybody over there that can help you start off to get on your feet, it would be a great experience.
I'm curious why you bring up Houston. Dallas I could see. But why Houston?
One word DJ Screw. R I.P. Screw is considered one of the best dj's to ever exist he is a legend in Houston and throughout the south ppl have his picture tattooed on them in Houston. Houston has a more all around established music scene then Dallas. From hip hop to techno.

Look up the DJ screw documentary on YouTube. That guy started a whole new genre of hip hop. ( He was a very popular underground Dj that would make millions today if he where Alive still.) Looking up his wiki can help give you some info as well.

For hip-hip, sure. But that doesn't sound like the scene/genre the OP is looking for.

Houston and Dallas both have a good techno scene. I believe saltwater is from the Houston area.
