My wife and I want to leave Raleigh, and probably the biggest reason is that we don't feel comfortable outside in the warmer months. We're always having to be on guard for the insane amount of big spiders, as well as roaches, fire ants, chiggers, no-see-ums, ticks, copperheads, and all manner of critter.
Seems like Lexington is quite a ways north of Raleigh, is consistently around 5-10 degrees cooler throughout the year (on average), and gets over twice as much snow. I'm hoping those stats translate to noticeably fewer run-ins with bugs and critters.
Can anyone attest to the difference between these cities in terms of bugs and critters?

Besides being slightly cooler year round and averaging twice the snowfall, otherwise the weather during the warmest part of the year in Lexington is not all that different from the summer weather in Raleigh except for the fact that Raleigh may stay oppressively hot and humid a little while longer than Lexington, there will in all probability be more similarities between the two cities than differences given that both are in the South, My guess is that Lexington is like a cooler version of Raleigh sans the fire ants.
If you live in the burbs or in the exurbs of either city, you are likely to encounter more "critters". Perhaps you should consider a more urban lifestyle instead? I have a condo in DT Raleigh and don't have the issues that you state.
