Top 5 North American cities that are your PERSONAL favorite places to eat? [North America in the context of this thread being Canada, Mexico, and United States]
No articles or lists please with rankings for top food cities. Posting articles about certain foods your city specializes in is okay, as long as your are trying to explain to others about it and not advertising to manipulate the responses of others.
I am asking about your 5 favorite food cities on the continent. While none of us have probably ever even scratched the surface of even 1% of the restaurants in most big cities, we have our own preferences even then. Which is okay, since some cities have "niche" offerings in food where they specialize in something that is not easily quantifiable anywhere else.
What are your 5 favorite cities for food? Please, no arguing with others on their opinions, let people have their own selections and have your own. Also, if you feel like sharing, which cuisines do you think helped that city become one of your favorites? What other cuisines do you like in that city?
No Michelin Guide or ranking based responses please. This is not one of those type of threads, if you want that, please resurrect one of those threads instead.
Boston
New Orleans
San Francisco/Bay Area
Los Angeles/Southern California
New York City
I like having lots of options, and most of these cities are the top for a variety of foods.
Boston and NO are niche. I was also tossing around Memphis (BBQ).
I obviously have not been to every city in the country enough to really be able to have a definitive list. And many of the cities I have been to, I did not "eat my way through the city," as they say. Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, all too cursory of experiences to really gauge their food. So my top five list may partially be borne of ignorance.
People always assume my username has to do with being a foodie or something; it is a reference to something else entirely. I love to explore new foods but am no expert, not even close.
Interesting topic. How about people start posting their reasons, though? Even though some might be self-explanatory, it would be good to see why some find that city to be a great place to eat.
NYC - for such a big/expensive city, you can great food here for cheap. Pizza, bagels, hot dogs, falafels, etc.
LA - Ditto, except LA specializes in Mexican food, which I love. Also pretty much the best city ever for a wide variety of burger joints.
Montreal - The French take their food seriously. Love it.
New Orleans - Pretty close to Montreal. There are some hidden gems here.
Philadelphia - Love cheesesteaks and pretzels.
