Tennessee just edges out Florida and NY for the 10 spot.

I imagine this is in percentages, rather than raw numbers?

Yes, as NY, Texas and Florida are 1, 2 and 3 in some order and depending who you include, in terms of raw numbers.

I think Georgia is the only state that's top 5 in both % and raw numbers.

I don't think many people realize how "black" Delaware is.

Yup....NC, MD and VA are in the top 10 in terms of percentage and numbers.

Delaware gets forgotten about in general, but when you see its proximity to the Philadelphia and Baltimore areas, as well as the Eastern Shore of MD, it isn't that much of a surprise. Wilmington is actually a predominately Black city and it is popular with retirees of various backgrounds as well due to tax reasons.

Delaware gets forgotten because the raw number is still pretty small. Only around 220,000 Blacks. High percentage but still a very low number.

It does have less than a million people(about 935,000). So, its state population is on par with a top 10 city or a metro in the 50-60th range. Its small size as a state doesn't help in terms of exposure either.

It does have a HBCU in Delaware State in Dover(42% Black).

More Delaware info: Delaware Black Population Percentage City Rank Based on US Census 2010 data

So, its two biggest cities are 1st and 3rd in Black percentage.

There are a lot of blacks in NY; especially downstate. I find that they aren't as wide spread statewide as in the south however. I wonder why that is.
