Austin appears to be more fun, while Nashville looks better. Nashville is a more mature city (more developed) but Austin is more progressive feeling. Not that Nashville isn't progressive, but Austin prides itself on being that way while Nashville is more balanced. I think that is largely due to Nashville's large religious presence and moderate to left leaning majority. Nashville's upscale homes and densely forested topography, lakes, and rivers give it a more appealing look to me.
Nashville has much more than Modern Country (or just Country, for that matter).
To be fair, so does every other city in the country. There's not a day that goes by that you don't see or hear some advertisement exploiting country music or exaggerated southern accents. Takes away from the "cool" factor for me.
Austin felt like the more laid-back, progressive, fun-loving city during my visits. Nashville's personality is much colder, corporate, and conservative, though there are exceptions. Neither offer a great deal more than your average city, other than their gimmicks, but Austin has the more youthful, social, vibrant personality that I prefer.
Austin has SXSW which is awesome. But Nashville is better looking
