Media wise it's much closer to NYC and economy wise it's much closer to Chicago. But which do you find it to be closer to overall considering everything else?
I'd say NYC. Not in terms of what the city is like, because they are wildly different, but in terms of it being a global city. Chicago is the 3rd biggest city in America but it still has half the city population that LA does. Many people who leave NYC go straight to LA and don't even consider Chicago. I used to live in LA and have spent tons of time in NYC. I think both cities offer the same visiting and living experience, but in very different ways.
LA isn't like either of them. As far as impact and significance go though, LA is closer to New York. Chicago is my favorite US city, but it's quite a bit behind both NYC and LA.

Chicago is not half the size of LA in city or in metro.
Only if you count CSA is Chicago roughly half the size of LA.

The LA CSA is so seamless and contiguous that it functions much more like a metro than a CSA.
