Most cities are now bucking that trend.

So a link to a story with a lot of shootings proves that Birmingham's murder rate is lower than Chicago's? Look at the facts. Chicago has an average of 15 murders per 100,000 where Birmingham is around 30 murders per 100,000. This story isn't about Birmingham vs Chicago though, it's about Birmingham vs Memphis, and even Memphis is safer than Birmingham.

Birmingham is gaining population with its downtown thriving like never before

I dont paticually care for either City, but for different reasons. Birmingham is just Blah, hands down... Now Memphis is just a City that is Crazy for no reason, entirely too Much going on and the Crime is ridiculous, period. I enjoyed visiting Memphis much much more, a lot to do there. Casinos, Beale Street, shopping, etc. As far as laying my head in the City and resting easy,,, Nota... The place just gave me an Uncomfortable feeling the whole time i was there, even in a nice hotel. So my equation for this is Birmingham=Boring, nothing to do Memphis=Zoo,Wild with some excitement but watch your back.

1.14 million. That's not quite 1.2 million. Birmingham metro is growing, so it will get there, but it's not there yet.

Birmingham proper has been losing population for 50 years now, while the metro area grows. I understand that downtown Birmingham is seeing some revitalization, but so far that has not been enough to offset the huge population declines that Birmingham has been suffering from other sections of the city.

I don't think it's a big problem as your making it out to be Most of it had to do with those moving to city suburbs. It's not like moving to the suburb areas means that no one ever enters the inner city lol. But a LOT of the younger residents have been moving back into the city, as well as those from Mobile, Montgomery, Hunstville, or even other parts of Georgia. They're building a bunch of newer Apartments and Condos across the city, especially downtown, and on the Southside. Speaking of the Southside, it's probably the most dense area between Memphis and Birmingham.

I give Memphis the edge, but Birmingham is def growing.

It is NEVER a good thing for a city to lose population, they are losing a vital section of their tax base when they lose residents, regardless if they stay in the metro area or not, that is less revenue the city can bring in from its residents.

By the 2020 census we will be able to see how much this younger generation appreciates cities, since this seems to be a national trend with the milennials moving to downtown and more urban areas, but for the past 50 years many cities, Birmingham included, have been losing thousands of people.
