We all know this will never happen...But let's say if the SF Bay area loses all its tech companies and the LA and surrounding areas loses Hollywood and all it's film companies/studios. Which city will be more devastated by their loss..?

Well considering the importance of Hollywood to LA is not comparable to the importance of Silicon Valley to the Bay Area (Hollywood is not LA's leading industry)... The answer is pretty simple. What's with threads that have google-able objective answers?

You sure this is google-able for the average schmo? I'm not saying it is not but how will one "google this" wise man?

Definitely San Francisco. Los Angeles would lose some prestige but it would still be an economic powerhouse. As RadicalAtheist states, it's not our leading industry and more of a (strong) niche at this point.

The thread kind of reminds me of random arguments with people not knowledgable of CA who overstate the importance of Hollywood to the state. "All that state has is the movie industry!" (not directed at you, OP). Granted, that mainly occurred before the popularization of wine country (which helped shine more of a light on CA's overall agro domination) and SV. People always underestimate tourism as an industry as well. But to be fair, only nerds on websites like these are interested / care about this stuff to begin with.

Okay obviously this thread failed...How about to make it more difficult.
if the SF Bay area loses all its tech companies and the LA and surrounding areas loses Hollywood...Which city will lose more of it's prestige?

This is such a bad hypothetical....its hard to have any discussion.

What if NYC lost Manhattan? Or if Washington DC was no longer the capital of the US? Or if Paris swapped out all their historic architecture for modern boxes? Would it lose its charm?
