i'm thinking of creating a poll of what cities have the most/best movies that are set in them.

all i can think of for now are:

menace ii society
training day
...

new york
do the right thing
he's just not that into you
sex and the city
...

boston

There's a lot of Boston Irish mob/Italian Mob movies set in present day, but in reality that last Irish and Italian mobsters were Whitey Bulger and Gerry Angiulo in the 90's.

The LA ones you mentioned are good but very limited in scope (South central/gangs/violence) compared to the huge breadth of films that show different sides of this city.

Too many to mention, but here's some of my favorites:

Drive
The Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction
500 Days of Summer
Point Break
Friday
Repo Man
To Live and Die in LA
LA Confidential
Slums of Beverly Hills
Clueless
The Bling Ring
Swingers
Beverly Hills Cop
Mi Vida Loca
Bladerunner
Magnolia
Boogie Nights
LA Story
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Nightcrawler
Mulholland Drive
Earth Girls Are Easy
Chinatown
Crash
Heat
Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Collateral
Less Than Zero

This being the city where the movies are made, residents get excited when films actually show Los Angeles as it is, rather than the regular routine LA being used as a stand-in pretending to be a different city. So naturally, there's tons of these lists floating around:

Los Angeles movies: 50 films that best capture the essence of L.A. | Timeout
40 Movies That Define Los Angeles | Buzzfeed
The 25 best films about Los Angeles | LA Times

Also, there's actually movie that is nothing but clips spliced together from different movies that feature LA. Its called Los Angeles plays itself, you can watch it on Netflix.

What's your criteria, my Lord? Is it the thread title? "cities that portray important charecters in the films that are set in them." Or is it, "what cities have the most/best movies that are set in them"?

Based on the movies that you listed; I presume that it is the latter. If the thread title is the criteria. Who are the important characters in Boyz in the Hood, etc.? I loved the movie. However, Doughboy would hardly be considered important.

Your thread title, while intriguing, is poorly worded and confusing. What exactly are you asking? Which city has the most iconic film characters (Tony Montana=Miami, Rocky Balboa=Philly, etc.)? Or which city has the best film representation as its own "character" (The Warriors=NYC, Crash=Los Angeles, etc)? Please clarify.

Philly has some good movies that hit a lot of genres.

Drama: Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington
Suspense/horror: Sixth Sense
Sports: Rocky
Comedy: Trading Places
Scifi: 12 Monkeys
Adventure: National Treasure
Classic: Philadelphia Story
Detective: Witness
Documentary: 30 For 30: Final Shot (Let the Fire Burn is another good one).

Idk there are others like Silver Lining Playbook, World War Z, Unbreakable, Law Abiding Citizen.

The city and inner ring suburbs of Detroit were major players in the indie horror hit It Follows.
