Why does NYC never lose in City vs. City polls? Is it because it has such a high population, and therefore probably has a higher number of people on CD than most other cities?

NYC is just the biggest and baddest at everything. It has both quality and quantity. It can be challenged or topped at a few things like best architecture, best weather, best waterfront, and best tech sector . I'm sure I can name a few more things, but for the most part NYC reigns supreme.

Just like how California never loses state to state polls,It's mostly the population & those who are voting.

But in reality Nyc is a city that reign supremes but not like how it used to be.

I'm pretty sure NYC would lose a "best bang for your buck" poll.

There's a general school of thought that New York has the best of everything, that's why. And that's not really true. Sure, with it being (by far) the largest city, is can't be matched in quantity for most things. But much (not all, but much)of what can be found in New York can also be found in other major cities, at lesser quantity, yet still plentiful. I tend to tune out the convos when someone tries to end a convo by saying "duh, New York"....

Then there's also the fact that New York is extremely expensive, as someone said earlier. But New York isn't gonna lose a cd poll, because in here, New York runs everything...

Because New York is far and away the most urban, biggest, largest, most diverse, etc. city in the country and many people on this forum, being urbanists, value those things and ask polls about those things

You have to step outside the U.S for New York to lose, Put New York against London or Hong Kong or something it could lose

It's mostly younger persons that value NYC(it's a phase - experience the hustle and bustle, bright lights etc..etc.. and then you grow tired of it/move out). That's why New Yorkers leave for places like FL or out West.

London can't beat NYC. Maybe Tokyo(being one of the cleanest large cities) or Shanghai..Hong Kong is smaller, even though they have a large number of buildings.

Because it's America's premier city and some people think there is no contest when it comes to comparisons with other cities. Obviously not everyone wants to live there (or it would be at least twice its size) and there are other great US cities with a lot to offer, but NYC is our leading city and by some standards the leading city in the world.

And there are probably more NYC members on city-data than any other city, so there's that.

Anybody who has been on City-Data for a considerable amount of time can predict every poll. In general it works like this.

When comparing two cities, if NYC is in the poll it will always win. If it isn't, if one of the cities is in the Northeast against a city in the central or southern parts of the country, the city in the Northeast will win.

For two cities in the east vs central or western cities, the city in the east will win. Bonus points again for cities in the Northeast.

On the west coast, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle are beloved and will usually beat anything in Southern California.

Most of the time a larger city will always beat a smaller city. Austin and Denver pull above their weight and will usually win despite being smaller.

The South is generally disliked except for Miami and New Orleans, but will win against most Plains cities and the smaller Midwestern cities.

Detroit, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and Oklahoma City are despised and will always lose any contest, unless they are competing against each other and it will be Detroit > Jacksonville > Phoenix > Oklahoma City.
