Grand Rapids, as it is growing and isn't as isolated.

Montrose, CO

It is much larger than Ely (19k vs. 4k) and offers more to do, but is still a nice small town in the scenic Colorado Rockies. About an hour drive to Grand Junction (60k).

Fresno, CA or Fort Wayne, IN ?

Calexico, CA

Both have miserable summers, but from Calexico can escape the heat occasionally with getaways to San Diego 120 miles away. Have two friends in SD. It is also closer to Lake Havasu City, AZ where a few of my relatives live.

Ogden, UT or Santa Rosa, CA ?
