I tend to not be a fan of the sprawl that plagues much of the sunbelt suburbs. St. Paul and its twin Minneapolis are a thriving northern metro, nice diverse economy and world class recreation/parks etc.
Only draw back to MN are the cold winters. But I prefer a cold winter over oppressive heat.

Providence, RI or Albany, NY
Providence RI because its fun and close to really nice beaches.
This is a close one. I'll say Albany. Burlington and the Lake Champlain area is beautiful, but a bit geographically isolated. Like Albany's location better and it's a little more affordable too.
Salem, because my sister has a beach house on the coast west of there.
Browns Valley, SD or Viroqua, WI?
