Probably between Denver and San Diego right now with Denver having an edge for being a regional hub and having a bigger corporate presence. Although if SF, LA, and Seattle weren't in the picture SD would likely be much stronger economically and politically, plus it has a seaport which would absorb much of the trade that LA/LB and Oakland ports have.

If SF & LA don't exist then Sacto and SD automatically become the most important places in the west, despite places like Denver potentially already being a better all around place.

If California falls in to the Pacific then it is obviously a place like Denver or possibly PHX. A place with a dominant economy. Although Portland's GDP might have passed Denver already and has good bones for a city.

All these cities can claim the Fourth spot after Seattle (no particular order).

Vegas - Entertainment Capital, Sin City
San Diego - Home of the Navy
Denver - Most well rounded city of the list IMO.
Sacramento - capital of the largest state of the Union
Portland - known for smart growth, most liberal of the bunch.

the most influential currently on the list today is most likely Vegas and it's definitely the most internationally most recognizable of the bunch. However if LA SF and SEA were erased than either San Diego, Portland or Sacramento would grow into their shoes mainly because of their geographic locations. (btw I voted Vegas)

Definitely Denver.

- solid airport (sixth busiest in terms of total passengers)
- booming economy
- very urban downtown
- state capitol
- a forerunner in passing new legislation

I'm sorry but Portland and Sacramento are not more impotant/powerful than Phoenix.

They (Portland & Sacto) most likely would be with no SF, LA or SEA... I don't think that is much of a stretch at all.

As for Oakland & San Jose, I assume those places disappear with SF?
