Wealth and cost of living are nearly opposite criteria.

Overall, I would choose to live in Beverly Hills, the part above Sunset.

The quality of life, crime, dining, weather, shopping and schools are hard to beat...not to mention nightlife on The Strip.

I would take Beverly Hills. It's the only one in the heart of a major big city.

Yep! Atherton?! Sheesh, could you have picked a sleepier, out of the way suburb? It's got some great suburban California estates but that's all there is to it. Can't do Florida so that's out and Bethesda?, again, snoozeville, albeit better than Atherton.

I pick Atherton. I work nearby, many of my associates live there, it's close to most of the companies I work with, and it's a very nice area. In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that I want to live in around Oakland(even if it means an hour and change in commuting each way) to be closer to the urban East Bay and closer to The City, I might pick Atherton.

Speaking of which, OP, a much better Bay Area comparison to Beverly Hills as far as proximity to amenities would be where I actually live now, Piedmont has what is often called the best school district in the state, and is quite lovely and oh so close to Michelin-recognized restaurants, very nice walkable and trendy neighborhoods(Rockridge, Piedmont Av, Grand Av, Lakeshore), close to UC Berkeley, and close to The City. Even accessible by BART.

Beverly Hills to Downtown LA: 10 Miles
Piedmont to Downtown SF: 11 Miles

My neighborhood.

Nothing can touch Beverley Hills but I also love Bethesda.

I've been to Bethesda many times, but it's on a smaller scale than BH.

I voted for Beverly Hills but Coral Gables is my second choice.

Though I think Pasadena, California can give all these places a run for the money (minus the good school district).

Bethesda downtown has way more restaurants and shops than any of these other cities. Also, a very short drive to DC. I've been to BH and Bethesda downtown is defiantly more urban.
