I will agree that Calfiornia has many great universities. But what state of 40 million, with 2 world class metro areas, wouldn't?

I disagree entirely that CA has a "fantastic" k-12 system. Their average SAT score, relative to the percentage of students who took the SAT, is mediocre.

look at NJ it had like half of the top 10 public high schools in US as recently rated but again these are places that excel that said a list of 12 or 20 schools is just that, to me the average or median score may actually be more interesting here
I agree. But even then, it can mislead us. Take NY for example, with NYC accounting for close to half of the state's student body. It significantly lowers the state's avg.

Chicago now has 3 universities in the top 100 as Loyola squeaked in.

Boston no question. It has two top universities, several very strong liberal arts colleges, and quite a few other reputable private colleges. A respected and well-run public university system. One of the strongest overall public high school systems in the country. With schools like Andover, Deerfield, and others, the Massachusetts area also has some of the strongest private high schools in the country. I can't think of any other metro that comes close (although if I had to pick, I'd say NYC metro & SF Bay metro are #'s 2 and 3). DC metro is also a very strong showing for public high school quality, esp in MoCo/HoCo Maryland and much of northern Virginia.

There is a mistake in the OP post. While Cornell has their main campus in Ithaca, NY, they also have facilities in NYC, including the medical grad school campus in Manhattan, so at least their medical school tally should go to NYC.
