I could also see an argument for Atlanta. Would be interesting to see this caliber of a museum associated with the AUC with an educational institute and think tank.
I could see Atlanta being ambitious enough to build one, but I wouldn't really be too keen on that since it had very few slaves to begin with. Outside of the nation's capital, such a musuem should have other historic sites of similar importance in the area to make for a more comprehensive educational experience IMO.

Atlanta wouldn't make a ton of sense, an "Old South" city would make better sense.

I'm definitely thinking Charleston.

Does Atlanta not have a museum completely dedicated to African American history already?

Almost all of these cities do and/or are building one or have plans to, but none have a museum dedicated to slavery specifically.

Interesting, I see the distinction now. The African American Museum in Philadelphia also is just a general history museum with rotating subjects. African American Museum in Philadelphia - HOME

As for the poster above, the same reason that there are Holocaust Museums in our country: to remember, and to learn from our history. It's nothing to pave over...

Would it be more important for the host city to have great historical significance as related to slavery & the slave trade or to have less history but a large, culturally rich and visibly progressive black community?

I voted DC. For 2 reasons, I can't imagine anywhere else where a museum would get as much funding and publicity. Second reason, slavery was a huge part of most of America (it was a national/Federal problem), it wasn't entirely centered on any city, historically it effected the whole nation, and should from my perspective be place in DC to represent that. DC already hosts many museums, and to me it just makes sense to put it there. The downside to putting it in DC is it could be over shadowed by other museums, but I find that unlikely. I personally would be less likely to visit the museum in any other city, but DC is a huge tourist city, and I'll visit it many times over my life. My families ancestors had roles we are quite proud of in Bleeding Kansas, and fighting for the Union army in Missouri and Tennessee. I would definitely visit that museum in DC.
