I saw where you said Houston had several of those scenes too. In that same comment about clubs closing at 2am

House music is a Chicago sound, and Houston is by far in favor of supporting local sound. Atlanta is more into feeding off of the culture of other places, so the house scene or things like "New York Fest" did not surprise me or interest me.

Black Mecca is a loosely defined term with no universal agreement about what it includes, so personal opinions are all this thread is really about.
Lol.. "Houston is by far in favor of supporting local sound". Atlantans do also, it just happens that more of our local artists produce music people outside of Atlanta actually listen to and become famous.

That assertion rests on the belief that there is only one Black Mecca, and I haven't seen anyone else agree to that. If Atlanta was truly the only city worth discussing there would not be 2000+ posts on the topic.

You need to re-read that post.

Notice I said local sound, not local talent. Atlanta has plenty of the latter but seems to have lost the former years ago. For years the "sound" coming out of there has really been nothing but a mishmash of music from all over the South and country. Truth be told, Atlanta has been biting for years. Took bass from Miami, crunk from Memphis, Southern G-funk from Texas, etc.

Atlanta artists certainly have mass appeal, but so did Vanilla Ice at one point.

I believe the fact that Atlanta not only has a vibrant local music scene, yet is able to meld regional influences into it's music culture then broadcast it to the world, stands as a testament to how much more culturally significant Atlanta is considered than a place like Houston.

Many people listen to Atlanta's music because they're interested in what's happening there. Houston's rap scene has devolved into a primarily locally supported "sound".

Well, I respect your opinion. Atlanta is definitely an important city in the realm of pop culture. I'll never deny that.

In actuality, Houston's music scene has had global notoriety for quite some time, and it's one of the most appreciated underground scenes there is. Your favorite rapper has a favorite rapper from Houston. And the city is still home to the biggest Black superstar of this age. That counts for something.

Kudos to ATL stealing stuff. LOL. Atlanta still thinks it's the NYC of the South.

Houston never thinks it's something that it's not.
