Austin seems to have a better economy and has great colleges in the area and its the capitol of texas. i've never liked nashville that much when driving through.

Austin is the clear winner for beach access.

I don't see what Dallas and Houston offer that Atlanta doesn't.

Within 250 miles of Nashville you have Memphis, Louisville, the Smoky mountains, the Cumberland Plateau, Chattanooga, Birmingham, as well as Atlanta.

So it's really not about Austin having a lack of proximity of interesting places. It's just that you simply prefer the places Nashville is closer to, am I right?

That's part of it.

But in part I was wondering, as a potential tourist - are there interesting places around Austin I don't know about.

I lovelovelove San Antonio, and I've been to the hill country and Hippie Holler. Just wondering what other touristic places are around Austin.

Also if there are things that Dallas and Houston offer that Atlanta doesn't, this is your opportunity to point them out.

Well, I don't think so, because this thread is supposed to be about Nashville and Austin. But there are countless threads comparing those three cities.

I'll bite. In many ways, very comparable cities.

Music: a wash, Nashville better for mainstream country, Austin for Indie rock, alt country. Both mediocre jazz, classical towns. Austin has better blues.

Scenery: both sort of hilly, and a river runs through it. Nashville is working on its riverfront but right now, Austin makes better use of it riverfront.

Urbanity/downtown: Austin is currently ahead, better skyline, higher residential population downtown, more basic amenities like grocery stores, more restaurants and bars: generally a more viable live, work, play neighborhood than downtown Nashville.

Sports: Nashville. Austin is a one note Longhorn town. Nashville actually has pro sports.

Economy: Austin has the slightly larger GDP, and lower unemployment rate, but both cities are doing well.

Food: Austin by a long way. Both cities have a plethora of nouvelle Southern restaurants, but Austin has a significantly higher immigrant population and it shows in food offerings, though Nashville has much better Middle Eastern food. Austin has more and better Asian, Latin American and vernacular food - Tex Mex, BBQ, and trickle up Gulf coast/Cajun cuisine. Soul food offerings are equivalent in both cities.

High cultural offerings are mediocre in both cities.

Weather subjective: I think Austin has worse summers but better winters than Nashville.

Surrounding terrain: Austin. I think the combination of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Monterrey cumulatively offer more than Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, and while Texas beaches are not the best, they are much better than Tennessee beaches !

As both a place to live and a place to visit, Austin edges Nashville, but not by a huge margin.

God knows, I am constantly telling people who think they love Austin sight unseen, "have you considered Nashville?"

Personally, I'm a bit confused by the "best city in Texas" title that Austin is often given, when its own residents are suggesting Nashville, Tennessee as a viable alternative. Does this mean Memphis is just as awesome as Houston?

I don't think they are as similar as people make them out to be.

Austin is a millennial hotspot and feels like an overgrown college town. Nashville feels like a colder, more corporate city. If you're young and want to socialize, date, etc. it's Austin hands down. There are some transplants from all over in Nashville, but it still feels far more conservative.

I'd say Nashville is better for the time being if you're settled down and just want to live a typical suburban lifestyle, but I'd still pick Austin because it's more laid back and fun-loving, and Nashville and the people in it take it too seriously IMO. Many locals in Nashville have rarely been outside of the city, and it's got too many homers. People in Austin can admit to its faults.

Nightlife, food, people, culture all win for me in Austin by a large margin.
