Mississippi and Alabama, two states that everyone associated with the deep south more than anything else. Two states carrying some of the thickest accents, rural lifestyles, and deeply religious states.

Mississippi has the most churches per capita of any state in the country, I suspect Alabama would not be far behind. Even on the map the two states are twins, Alabama is a mirror image of Mississippi, and vice versa.

My question is, which state is better in terms of economic capabilities, better life style, schools, colleges/universities, progression, wealth, exports, tourism, etc, and why is the other state behind?

Also, will these two states ever be able to shed their stereotypes and overcome them?

Alabama is certainly ahead, no question. Mississippi doesn't have a metro of 1.2 million like Birmingham, a port like Mobile's, or a high-tech metro like Huntsville.

And while Alabama and Mississippi are "twins" are far as their shapes go, in terms of geography Alabama and Georgia are more like mirror images and overall I'd say the state is more like Georgia and South Carolina than Mississippi.

Alabama has an edge on Mississippi.Alabama has a large metro and a few medium sized metros .Mississippi only has one medium sized metro and Alabama has better beaches also.

Alabama. To top it off...Alabama's most progressive city is Huntsville and it's only the fourth largest in the state although I think it may become the largest city some day. Mississippi doesn't have any cities to stack against Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile or Huntsville in my opinion. Alabama is more comparable to South Carolina.

Well Jackson > Montgomery and is on somewhat even ground with Mobile IMO. And it could be argued that Oxford is the best college town between the two states. But otherwise, AL mostly wins this.

Mississippi beat Alabama handily in murders and impoverished citizens. Alabama really needs to step up its game.

are you sure? Jackson is a pretty rundown city. It has a few nice areas, and the suburbs are great. But the city itself is not that impressive. I've only driven through Montgomery once. If anything, I'd call the cities even.

Oxford is a wonderful college town, but it's no Tuscaloosa. University of Alabama draws so many people in because of its football program. Is Ole Miss known for any specialties? I'm not sure.

Mississippi does have the beach towns. Gulfport and Biloxi, loaded with casinos and decent beaches, then you have Ocean Springs, a nice tourist town with lots of condos and nice beaches. Does Alabama have anything in that regard?

I prefer Alabama on pretty much all counts.

Cities: Alabama's big cities are much better: Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery handily beat Jackson which is the only somewhat sizable city in Mississippi. Huntsville in particular has a bright future.

Education: Alabama as a whole has slightly better educational attainment (although both could use improving). Also both Auburn and University of Alabama are better than Ole Miss and Miss State.

Geogrpahy: Alabama has better range of geography b/c while both have small strips of Gulf Coast access, Alabama has some mountains in the northern part of the state.

I'm not talking about aesthetics (which is subjective), but objective metrics. Jackson is ahead of Montgomery on most fronts: population, growth, GDP, amenities, etc.

Orange Beach,Gulfshores,Perdido, and Dauphin Island has everything that the Mississippi Gulf has except for casinos.I think the water is prettier and there are more shops, restaurants and things to do on The Bama coast than Mississippi. The Mississippi coast had some of the best stock of Antebellum homes in the U.S on the coast pre katrina.
