Well, for those saying Toronto is THE canadian city... Well, when you immigrate to Canada, you do not have much choice, only Toronto is a power horse, the rest are nothing, Montreal is not that powerful. Only french speaker from "third world" countries and French goes there... And most French immigrant leave Montreal after a few years because when you actually move there, you realize that it is not that dynamic. So Toronto is kind of on its own... While for the US, you have Boston, NYC, Philly, DC, ATL (and that's only in the east coast...).. So it is much harder for those cities to stand out than it is for toronto which gets pretty much all the goverment financing
I'd say Philadelphia has the brightest future.
It's the only World Heritage City in the United States.
Philly recently hosted the Pope on the gorgeous Ben Franklin Parkway.
Not to far from the King of Prussia Mall, and has multiple areas of re-development, especially Center City.

The GE move is pretty big. I was secretly pulling for Providence to land it (they were in the running), but I'm glad Boston got it. It'll be the biggest corporate HQ in the area by a good margin.
I heard rumors about a year and a half ago that Bank of America is strongly considering relocating their HQ to Boston as well. It had something to do with access to talent, and a shift in power from former North Carolina National Bank execs. to former Fleet Boston execs. I googled, "Bank of America HQ to Boston" and the first result was driving directions from Charlotte to Boston (touche google). But I did find this Market Watch piece from August '14 that suggested it may happen in the next 5 years. I know some financial people in Boston who are watching the situation closely. It's still speculation (with no recent updates) at this point, however. It would be huge if it happened.
*edit* July 15 article from Charlotte Observer that touches on the potential for a Bank of America to Boston (or New York) move for the same reasons mentioned above.

this and this. There's about 20 major parcels in play right now (w/ medium~huge going up in the next 2~3 years). But, after that.... under the current regime, FAA height restrictions, politics, zoning, historical landmarks, shadows, economics, infrastructure, underground problems, nimby's etc, there are very few parcels left that posess all the allowances required for the construction of big towers. Some will vehemently disagree. But, once you get into a close examination, it starts to look dire, imho.
We'll be okay for say 200'~340' for a few years as we move outward toward Roxbury, the Fenway, etc.... but, I've had a lengthy discussion with one of Golden's right hands. Unlike myself, the people at the BRA posess infinitely greater insight, and unfortunately, the city is running very low on options where you can build tall without tearing something that's already very valuable/(post urban renewal) down. Believe it or not.
They can do as Paris does and have a La Defense like towers area that is outside but near the city proper. Boston is, after all, the Paris of New England, right?
They should also build that North-South commuter rail tunnel and start running electrified through-running trains like the RER. All of that would be pretty good.
yes... it is also a small town with a very small metro, so can not compete with Toronto. Vancouver metro and city size is more comparable than Portland OR
