New York: Home to the consensus pick for greatest city in the U.S., miles and miles and miles of great beaches on Long Island, stunning vistas in the Hudson Valley, the Finger Lakes, some great little towns and smaller cities sprinkled throughout.
Massachusetts: I honestly think New England is the best region in the U.S., and within it, Massachusetts packs the most punch. Of course Boston, and then seaside towns, Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, the Berkshires, the Five College area.
California: Including this state is almost like cheating. Should really be like three states, but instead it's one, so you get San Francisco, LA and half of the Pacific coast all in one state, with nature you don't find anywhere else.
California - The great weather and desert, mountains, forests, and ocean
Arizona - Always loved the desert landscape. Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, cactus
Washington - Mountains, green, forests, Seattle, the ferries from Seattle to Bainbridge are incredible scenic and relaxing
New York - homer but also for New York City but also what is outside New York City such as the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes and Niagara Falls. Also a lot of history
Virginia - HISTORY!!! Plus the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Bay
Pennsylvania - Sort of like a blue collar version of New York and New England. Seems familiar but also a bit different. Beautiful rolling farmland
PS. Because I am a Northerner I have to give a shout out for FLORIDA!
Texas - home sweet home. The people, the economy, the different landscapes.
California - second home, utterly beautiful and magical place. The cities are top notch.
Colorado - again beautiful.
Honorable mention: Florida.
I cannot decide whether I like Texas or California better though because Cali is gorgeous but a mess economically, Texas is the only other state I know of besides CA with three or four major metro cities with ample big city amenities. All at half the price. Really it's just topography and weather that edges Texas a close 2nd. If not there would be no contest.
