Chicago's Lakeview/Lincoln Park and DC's central NW neighborhoods (the areas just north of downtown, roughly (Dupont to Shaw up to Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan) are comparable in many ways. Easily two of the top non-downtown urban zones in the country. Both have several busy commerical strips and a leafy mix of rowhomes and apartments on the side streets.
Which greater neighborhood has more activity and a greater mix of retail/restaurants/streetlife?
As someone who is moving to the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area in a week, I'm realllllly hoping to find some exciting responses here...haha. Personally, I really enjoyed the area when I was there and everyone I've spoken to they says that area is top notch for people moving to Chicago.
I haven't been to DC, so I can't compare it to their neighborhoods unfortunately, though I'd love to visit!

Both areas are vibrant & bustling neighborhoods with many amenities but I'd vote for Lakeview/Lincoln Park as the better of the 2 options because of all of the wonderful intangible options for quality of life & street life that are added there by the presence of wonderful Lake Michigan on the east edge of that area. A body of significant water adds so very much to a neighborhood or city.
