You can get southwestern cuisine in any large city.
Really? I lived in Philadelphia for many years and the so-called Southwestern cuisine that I had there was a pale imitation of what New Mexican food actually is. (On the other hand, don't expect to get a Philadelphia-quality cheesesteak in Albuquerque. I haven't found any place that pulls it off.)
Edit: oops, looks like this point was already made and acknowledged.

Ya know, it might save you some time just to put all of your (city) vs. (city) threads into one mega thread considering their nearly identical with the same criteria (I'm sure I missed a few) :
I agree with this mostly. Charlotte is bigger and will have more going on, but that said there is a lot more quirk in ABQ. ABQ has IMO significantly better weather and WAY better scenery, with the attendant outdoor recreational opportunities and a much more interesting regional cuisine. Charlotte is one of the most generic sunbelt cities in the U.S.: perfectly fine, but kinda bland, corporate and meh. If you like Charlotte, you probably won't like ABQ and vice-versa. I would rather hike the Sandia mountains than hang out in a mall. YMMV.
I live in the Charlotte area. I was pretty much agreeing with you until the last sentence; ouch, lol. I can look down my street and see the peak of Crowder's Mnt. It's a state park and my son hikes to the summit a couple of days a week. There's also Kings Mnt. SP a few miles from there. Also Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center. This doesn't even cover the tons of parks and many miles of greenways. I do agree ALB probably does have an edge in terms of scenery, but metro Charlotte has much, MUCH more than just malls and is a very beautiful, green, "flowering" metro. But both ALB and CLT are two top-rated metros that would be great choices for someone

Fair enough, but the dominant culture in ABQ is much more outdoor recreation oriented than CLT. The mountains are closer and bigger and the weather is more conducive year round to outdoor activities in ABQ. The summers are mostly mild and gorgeous: no bugs and no humidity. And proximity to great skiing in the winter. Not so much for CLT.
Charlotte, easily. It's a vibrant growing city near the mountains, beaches and some interesting places like Charleston, Asheville and Savannah etc.. Scenically, I prefer the lush wet Southeastern U.S. over the desert Southwest. New Mexico is one of my favorite Western states though. Santa Fe, Taos, Ruidoso, Alamogordo and Cloudcroft are some cool spots.
