I think this is a good 5 way comparison for nightlife among these cities. All of them are dramatically different from one another, thus, all of them exhibit different scenes completely that none of the others replicate (at least to that extent). Which makes it discussion worthy when there's very little overlap like that.
Scenes:
- Men
- Women
- Straight
- Not-straight
- Scenes for different backgrounds of people
Venues and Districts:
- Clustered together with other nightlife spots
- Served by public transit
- Accessible location in the city and metropolitan area
Regulations:
- Hours of operation
- Container laws
I think...this will very much depend on the individual. But personally, I feel like Chicago's nightlife caters to various demographics; especially regarding clubs, bars, lounges, raves, and etc. I mean it developed House Music, one of the most socially accepting scenes (Gays, Blacks, Straights, Whites, Latinos, etc.).
Can't really comment on nightlife in regards to Toronto and Atlanta, but will say that Chicago and Montreal are really good and varied while SF's is much more subdued and goes to bed pretty early overall which probably goes hand in hand with last call being pretty early and rapid transit services becoming pretty paltry pretty quick. I'd be interested to see what someone who votes for SF would say the rationale is.
This is probably the first I've actually been to all 5 cities included in a poll.
My ranking:
1. Montreal - great mix of nightlife options. People from NYC like to spend weekends there, so that tells you something.
I don't have a strong feeling about the rest, but my sense is:
2. Tie - Toronto/Chicago
3. San Francisco.
4. Atlanta - I live here, and the nightlife districts are widely scattered and pretty small. People used to make fun of the Buckhead village (due to the fairly large presence of rowdy college students), but it had by far the largest concentration of nightclubs and bars in the city before it was torn down to make way for a luxury shopping district. On the plus side, the options in Midtown Atlanta are expanding as the residential population continues to grow.
Somehow accidentally voted for SF but intended to vote for Chicago. Chicago's nightlife is seriously awesome and, if anything, underrated. It's my favorite nightlife city in America - I'd take it over NYC, LA, New Orleans, SF, Las Vegas, etc.
Too different to choose. Its like asking what is better between chitlins, banana pudding, crab legs, Captain Crunch cereal and bbq chicken
