There is something immoral about police officers and teachers not being able to afford a decent house in an entire metro area. Nimbyism is strangling the soul out of the Bay Area. smdh.

LOL...this is a detriment, not a badge of honor. To pay that much for a house that might be $100,000 in another city, and that one wouldn't touch, doesn't make one desire (at all), a move to San Francisco.
I was sitting in church recently trying to get my kids to sit still and while glancing at the pews I realized some extremely awesome people whom I had grown to love dearly have moved out of state for no other reason then they couldnt afford a house in a safe neighborhood with good schools. Anywhere within 25 miles of SF, that criteria costs a sum out of reach for virtually any middle class income, and that's a damned shame. $500,000 shouldnt be a shack in the ghetto. $1500 a month in rent shouldnt be a room in sime stranger's house. Thats just wrong, and we are shooting ourselves in the foot by blocking and opposing plans that seek to provide alleviation to our housing crisis.
I know of a duplex (2 bedroom/2 bath) on top of a hill with a view of the bay in San Francisco that needs extensive remodeling, valued at just over 2 million. My relatives (blue collar) bought it back in the 1940s from their landlord at the time. Property tax is $1348/year.

I was just reading a few articles lately about how San Fran needs to start building like crazy or doing something about the housing prices or it's really going to strangle the city and cause a lot of problems - problems most cities wouldn't even dream of, but it's very very serious to the long term health of the city.

The NIMBYs don't want more housing because it'll lower their housing values. If you bought in at 1 mil+ you don't want to see thousands of newer units constructed year after year...your housing values will drop. Something has gotta give before that bubble bursts, though. 60% of EXISTING homes valued at or above 1 mil is unsustainable.
