I picked Richmond, even though I think Nashville probably is nicer. I am surprised by Charleston's ratings. Charlestonians are rather aloof. Its not your typical Southern friendly city.
I can only judge by the week I spent there but I found the people to be very friendly. I didn't vote on the poll but out of those cities I would have chosen Charleston.

Wait, what??? Charleston is routinely noted for its friendliness/hospitality (along with Savannah) as evidenced by several rankings. They take enormous pride in it.
The hospitality in Charleston is palpable. I haven't been to any city that does it better.
Strangers on the street, street vendors, servers, the tourism workers at the local rest stop, cops...all super friendly and helpful.
If people were aloof to you, you were probably trying too hard to prove your Southern cred.
Perhaps Charleston has the San Diego effect. An amazing and helpful hospitality industry that is, as you said, palpable, but aloof and even prickly locals.

Except that's not the case at all. As a matter of fact, I can't think of any sizable Southern city that fits that description.
Have been visiting Charleston my whole life and they're some of the nicest people I know, and genuinely so. The last time we were there, a street artist we spoke to acted as if he's known us all his life. Great guy. We just love Charleston and its people.

Both as a visitor and through interactions in the workplace, I've found Charleston to be an exceptionally friendly place all around, even by Southern standards. It's also been recognized as the most well-mannered city in the nation. Aside from being a coastal city with a sizable military presence and plenty of warm sunny weather, Charleston has little in common with San Diego.
