Might also want to consider La Jolla. You get the western mountain feel and the ocean all in one. Its almost certainly pricier than Scottsdale or Boca, but you have a relatively pleasant feel year round.
Utter silliness. If you can deal with the Florida humidity and bugs and an occasional alligator Boca is a very nice place. In fact if you can afford ocean front in Boca go for it. With a strong sea breeze Boca is a livable place. Can't do the coast you are into the Everglades. Don't go there.
Scottsdale does not compare to Las Vegas. Never will. Climate is much worse and it is in Phoenix. It is a small suburb. Vegas has subdivisions about the same size as Scottsdale.
My assumption here is the OP can afford to deal with schools. In none of the 3 would I send my kids to the local schools unless they were suited to it. No point in sending an average kid to a heavy school.
Las Vegas is a real city. Pick your desire. Anything from 35,000 Sf to 600 SF condo. And if you can deal with the high end you can have it all and still be 20 minutes to the Strip.
Scottsdale or close was our third choice after Maui then LV then good Phoenix. We got only to number 2.
So Vegas has one subdivision 30% of its population lives? Scottsdale is roughly the same population as Henderson.
IMO Scottsdale has a better quality of life. Better infrastructure, better schools and better entertainment (unless you like casino shows over and over as a means for entertainment). Scottsdale has all the same great dining and shopping and it isn't going to be full of hungover tourist.
You can enjoy all the ammenities of the Phx area. Plus your close to Bartlett Lake, which is beautiful. You are close to the mountains for snow skiing, close enough to the ocean to still drive and still close enough to Vegas.

I was about to say... if you have money, then why not look into California as a place where you can have mountains, ocean, and great weather. What about warmer, sunnier places in or near the Bay Area? Santa Barbara?

Maybe because some people don't want to live in California?

Taxe$ If you have money you probably want to hang on to it. The OP is looking at two states without state income tax (NV and FL) and one state with relatively low income tax (AZ).

You do realize Scottsdale has 250K people, and stretches 33 miles end to end, right?
To me, Boca all the way. Good schools, fabulous recreation and planning (the Boca Club is fabulous); and Mizner Park is one of the finest suburban shopping/retail/residential/restaurant/entertainment complex in the country. And of course, water! Not just the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, but also the amazing Inland Water way to which many homes dock their boats right at the rear of their homes. And for all its wealth and prestige, Boca is a lot less snooty than one would think. Not that it doesn't exist, but it's just less so for a community of it's high caliber. (and overall it's generally pretty liberal politically, which I like)
As a native Floridian who looks down on his State, even I'll tell you that Boca Raton is better than Scottsdale, AZ to live. I actually like Scottsdale too.
Boca and Scottsdale are even, depends if you value beach/ocean or outdoors/openness.
I think Scottsdale is the clear winner, BUT I couldn't agree more with what you said in bold.
