I think these two cities are somewhat comparable. Des Moines is Midwestern and Oklahoma City is Southern, but they are both "peers" so to speak given the weight they pull in their region and what they offer. They are both capitals of rural states and both seem to be doing pretty well economically. Both are somewhat overshadowed by larger and perceived more vibrant cities in their region. So what do you think?

Brighter future:
Crime:
Infrastructure:
Economy:
Nightlife:
Culture:
Restaurants:
Shopping:
Urban Living:
Scenery:
Best Overall:

My own opinion is that Des Moines is ever so slightly ahead of OKC, but not by near as much as Omaha.

Here is my exact rundown.

Brighter future: Des Moines
Crime: Des Moines
Infrastructure: Des Moines
Economy: Des Moines
Nightlife: Toss-up
Culture: Des Moines
Restaurants: OKC
Shopping: Des Moines
Urban living: Des Moines
Scenery: Neither
Best Overall: Des Moines

Disclaimer: I don't think Des Moines blows OKC away on any of these categories, but they are ahead.

I would much rather live in OKC. Not even a question. Des Moines and Iowa just seem sooooooo bland.

Take this OP with a grain of salt. This fellow is an OKC resident who is not happy here. He has done this city vs. city thing pitting OKC against just about every mid size city in the country and now he is moving to the next tier of places.

His intent is to get an OKC bashfest going.

He has indicated that OKC is at the Lubbock and Amarillo level in some other discussions.

Umm, what. OKC is more then double the size of Des Moines. I can't imagine Des Moines being able to compete in much. I think both cities are below average cities for their sizes. I might put Des Moines ahead of Wichita, but not OKC. Omaha is a decent city for its size, but I don't think it's comparable to OKC either.

Seriously...OKC is losing to DM, Iowa? WOW...talk about a hated on city on this forum. I'm beyond curious at this point, what would make someone vote for DM over OKC?

Overall it's likely because Des Moines is more progressive, prettier, and has a more compact, urban downtown. Des Moines is Midwestern while OKC is Southern. Des Moines has a white collar feel while OKC feels decidedly blue collar. I don't think Des Moines offers a whole lot more than OKC, but it's an overall nicer city. Oklahoma City will always have perception issues because "Oklahoma" is in its name. Oklahoma is a state with a negative stigma very close to that of Mississippi.
