I would pick Georgia. Strong economy, decent cities(Atlanta, Savannah), good weather( prefer the heat to the cold), friendly people.

Looks like it was at first what I thought but then has been used in more recent times as what you and others have said.

New York has been called the “Empire State” since at least 1830. Georgia has been called the “Empire State of the South” since at least 1840. “If not now, she soon must be the ‘Empire State’ of the South” was cited in print in 1844, and citations for the nickname became numerous beginning in 1847.

The term means that Georgia, with its large land mass and large amount of people, is the leading state of the South. The nickname is still used, although less frequently than in the 19th century.

New York City is the last word in the United States.

However, outside of that, Georgia may be better in some ways than New York state.

Economy I agree but I would argue that Georgia identifies more with the southern states than Texas.

This article from New Georgia Encyclopedia lends some fascinating detail to the era of Georgia history prior to the Civil War when the term "Empire State of the South" was first popularized.

Georgia in 1860 | New Georgia Encyclopedia

Georgia was not just known at the time for being a very LARGE and diverse state geographically compared to the rest of the Union, but due to slavery and the plantation system had an enormous mass of wealth that was controlled by literally just a handful of powerful white landowners:

Quote:
Although more than 60 percent of white families in the state owned no slaves, the 37 percent who did, and especially the small tier of large planters, skewed the average to suggest that Georgia was among the wealthiest states in the Union. The per capita wealth of white Georgians in 1860, for example, was nearly double that of New Yorkers or Pennsylvanians.
