What that poster was pointing too is that the growth has been really noticeable in Phoenix, compared to say 90's and early 2000s AZ! Nobody was checking for it at the time. South Phoenix has come a long way, but its not the beacon of black folks for Phoenix like it was back in the 90s. Avondale, Laveen, Goodyear, Tolleson Buckeye, Litchfield Park seem to have a good amount of the AA growth in the metro. Tempe, Chandler Ahwatukee (S Phx) all have increases that make the Valley feel more like a destination for blacks in comparison to just 5 years ago. Quite cool to see honestly.
Yes, I'm familiar with the growth in terms of Phoenix's Black population. I was just mentioning where the Black population was concentrated prior to the recent growth.
Well, that's kind of why the number goes from 3.8 to 4.1million when it comes to black alone and black(1 or more race).
There are waaay more than 300K Latinos in the NYC metro with part African ancestry. I believe that number is referring to mixed race blacks who are not of Hispanic origin...I could be wrong though.

There always were or has been for a while in South Phoenix, as well as the places with a military base. More have just moved into the area from CA or parts of the Midwest.
Yeah, but back in the day...even say 15 years ago South Phoenix was literally the only part of town where you would see a lot of black folk. Nowadays there are neighborhoods and specifically high schools in Tempe, Chandler, westside, ect. that have large African American populations. For example, Mountain Pointe, a high school in Tempe is 20% black when around a decade ago it wasn't even 5% .... Betty Faifax high school is now 30% black. These are both high schools in the suburbs...back in the day you'd be hard pressed to even find a high school that was 10 percent black outside of South Phoenix.

I agree, it's very cool to see. The interesting thing about Phoenix (as you have listed) is that many areas with huge growth in black populations are concentrated in the suburbs compared to East coast/midwestern cites.

Well, it's not an exact literal science. Since this statistic is self-reported it is up to the individual views their "blackness". In some cultures it isn't the first way they see themselves, and in many cases they see themselves more as mixed...even though by American standards they are seen as 100% Black due to their skin tone.

Yup, as a mixed race person, trust me...I hate the way Americans view race, it's super archaic...I have family members who are mixed (black & white) and are latino...yet they actually checked white on the census. I'm mixed like them but I checked mixed race lol. Mind you if they were walking down the street, most people would view them as black (this goes back to the 1 drop rule/what you were talking about). I actually knew a Dominican who was darker than the average African American...yet they would get upset and deny their African roots. I'm by no means saying all Latinos of part African ancestry act this way, but this is most likely why the numbers are off, it all comes down to the self-reporting & the different cultural views on race that you were talking about.
I'm not surprised by Atlanta vs Dallas Ft Worth at all.
Keep in mind that job growth in Atlanta isn't what it used to be. And a lot of people are attracted to what appears to be a lower cost of living in Dallas. What are the industries in Dallas, how do they compare with Atlanta? Does Dallas has a better employment situation than Atlanta?
Also do not discount the huge influx of non Blacks into Atlanta over the last 10 to 20 years.
It's incredible that you have 8,262,458 urban African Americans living in the northeastern metro area's of NYC, DC/Baltimore, and Philly. By far the deepest, most talented, and influential collection of African American's anywhere in America within 4 hours drive of each other. No other area in the nation has a denser population of African American's in the nation.
Well it speaks to resiliency. While you do have Blacks that were priced out of the region, they either did not go far, or the numbers are just that strong that you still have a greater number than you have down South or out West.
