Not surprised with LA - it is the largest US county by population. What would be also interesting would be the rate of these types of homes. For example, LA County has something like 7 or 8X the population as New York County, but the amount of $2M+ homes is only 1.5X more.

You mean like how Santa Clara County has almost 3X less people than Cook County but has almost 5X more 2mil+ houses?

That too - should calculate it all out. It would be pretty interesting to see how things stand. Then adjust to COL Actually that would be a lot harder. The general list would be pretty cool

True but the rest of NYC doesn't have many. So it evens itself out.

It looks like the top 3 metro areas are
La
Sf
NYC

SoCal (LA, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties) = 106,021

NorCal (SF, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Monterey and Napa counties) = 90,271

Total = 196,292

NorCal obviously punches well above its weight here, but CA as a whole is just insane.

A 2 million dollar home in Santa Clara County, is probably the equivalent of a 1 million dollar home in Cook County.

Yes, it's important to figure in COL into this anyway and the price of housing. For your statement, completely depends on where. 2 million in Santa Clara County is actually going to be under $1M in Cook County in most places. Most of the most expensive real estate in the Chicago area is either in Lake County, some in DuPage County, or in various areas in or near downtown Chicago (like Lincoln Park, parts of Lakeview, Bucktown, etc).

A $2M place in a suburb like Cupertino might get you a nice 4 bed, 3 bath, 2000 sq ft home like this: 10576 Johnson Ave, Cupertino, CA 95014 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com®

A similar place in a decently nice suburb of Chicago like Glenview is going to be under $1M, for 1000 more sq ft:
1929 Westleigh Dr, Glenview, IL 60025 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com®

Even downtown Chicago is still not as expensive as some of those places. You can pretty easily find pretty nice 2 bd condos downtown for around $500-600K (less if you don't need as nice), such as:

Or comparing a 2M home and subdivision from one place to the next. In some places this buys upscale luxury, and in others it buys a cracker box on an over crowded street with all that implies.
