Pretty remarkable isn't it? The OP seems to hate Austin.

I don't hate either city. Memphis and Austin have not been compared before, so I thought it might be interesting see others' perspectives.

City-Data is PRO-AUSTIN if anything. I'm not too familiar with Memphis so I won't comment on that. I need to visit a city first in order to come up with an objective conclusion. But it's also 2016 -- I've been hearing about Austin for the past 10 years. You would think no other city has evolved or changed (for the better) in that time period the way people describe that overrated, overgrown college town. I know many native Austinites that are tired of the hype as well.

If you're a down-to-earth person that really wants to root for the underdog, then I can see why you would pick Memphis over Austin. If you're a shallow person that only cares about popularity on the "Top 10 Best Places to Live" lists, then I can see why you would pick Austin.

There are some factors such as COL, housing stock, traffic , possibly hospitals - where Memphis is clearly ahead of Austin. Weather and proximity to other cities could be considered. But they were not included in the original post.

Do you feel that because of these factors, Memphis is better than Austin?

Not really feeling Texas so I can't really speak on Austin, Since I'm not feeling Texas I probably would not like Austin, But I hear good things about it, I remember about a year ago I was at Chilli's in Memphis and the waitress was from Austin and was saying how much she misses Home (Austin)...so go figure

Economically it is No Question, Austin Smashes Memphis

However Memphis is turning the corner economically, There are some articles on the net even starting to call Memphis"Prosperous" and "Booming" Words I Never hear when describing Memphis but go figure

I say That to Say This, with recent additions Memphis is seriously becoming a cool(er) city 2016 Memphis is Much better than 2013 Memphis, 2016 Memphis is on a whole another level from 2008 Memphis.
