I am moving and these are my choices but I do not know which city to choose.

I want a cultural city with urban feeling, I want a city that is open minded and historic so there is a sense of identity. I want a city where I can walk without having to drive!!!

So far I've narrowed it down to.

- Saint Louis
- Minneapolis
- Cleveland
- Baltimore
- Philadelphia
- Pittsburgh

Based on my criteria which city would you pick for me?

PD: Would you recommend me another city along those lines?

Open-minded, sense of identity, cultural, historic, and open-minded could apply to all of these cities, actually. I'd be happy living in any of them.

For me personally Philadelphia is a tad too big, and Minneapolis is a tad too cold.

Your current list is kind of all over the place, many of those cities are very different from one another, Philadelphia obviously being by far the largest city in the group. But out of those 3 its Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Baltimore. St. Louis and Cleveland don't really pop into my mind for what you said you want.

If you don't care about size or price, add New York, Boston, and Chicago.

Philadelphia for sure. It is a global city on a different league compared to other cities on the list.

Philly is hands down the most walkable and urban of the list. Although it may depend on the particulars of your job, Philly (especially center city) is by far the easiest to live in without a car.

Baltimore would probably be 2nd.

Then I would say either Minneapolis or Pittsburgh. Minneapolis is bigger at this point, but Pittsburgh has more of a dense old historic feel.

Then either St Louis or Cleveland. St Louis has more traditionally historic urban architecture. The city has been improving, but has seen massive population loss and disinvestment over the past 50 years. Cleveland has less historic architecture and has seen similar issues to St Louis. But the city is a bit bigger, so I think they end up in similar places with reguard walkable urbanism. Which is to say they have a couple neighborhoods with walkable amenities. But neither really have the critical mass to be "urban walking/transit cities" in the way Philly or even Baltimore are.

I would definitely reccomend Philly out of all those. It's the best fit for all the things you listed. And also arguably the most historic city in The US with Boston.

Live without a car would be best in Philly or Cleveland.

1. Philly
2.Baltimore
3. Pittsburgh

I haven't been to the other cities yet, but of the 3 I've listed, one can easily live downtown without a car.

You're not only all over the place on size/scale but also cost of living. Philly is no longer the "hidden value" it once was and Minneapolis or Baltimore wouldn't be far behind. Do you have a rental/purchase budget in mind and what are your expectations for condition and location (best, better or ok neighborhood)?
