New York City living vs. West Palm Beach living (credit, house)

Hi I am looking to relocate to either NY or West Palm Beach, but i want to know which is a better city for work and nightlife? I'm 34 and single. I love the ocean, but NY has that also. What is the difference in cost of living, overall good times, place to start a family, restaurants, etc.? any help anyone?????

I plan to leave NYC in a handful of years, and West Palm Beach is one the places I would consider.

Manhattan upsides:

at least 10-15 world class restaurants
many night clubs
broadway theaters
many single 34 year olds
many jobs


Manhattan downsides:

many single 34 year olds
shoebox studio apt costs $400,000
many jobs pay the same as in cheaper cities
workaholic culture
bad public schools
long subway/train ride to cold beaches

I would b making about $50K to $70K per year and would be living in a roommate situation, i can't afford a house w/my credit...no way. What areas are decent to live in where i wouldn't get shot or mugged, but is still close to Midtown Manhattan, where I'd be working?

I'm in such an odd situation. I am 34, just relocated to Florida about 5 months ago from Chicago, where i lived my whole life, but where i'm at in Florida (Port Orange, next to Daytona Beach) does NOT have work, at all, so my dilemma is move to NY or West Palm Beach...i'm so darn confused on what to do. I need to go where the work is.....it the job market decent in NY?

I would only come to NY if you absolutely positively can't find a job in West Palm. There are plenty of jobs in New york, but salaries are not increasing with the very high costs of living in NYC. You will have a much better quality of life and a heck of alot less stress in FL

I live in NY, work in Manhattan if you can learn to live with the daily struggle of meeting expenses and trying to save $$ you will be just fine. Depending on your background you will be able to find a good job in a relatively short period of time in NYC. If your objective is to eventually become "un-single" you better look like Beyonce because competition for good men in NY is fierce amongst young women. Many are single, depressed and have lost hope.

I'm a legal secretary so i hope i can find SOMETHING in Manhattan...right? I'm pretty, not beautiful, but definitely up there, i'm going by compliments from men that i get...i get hit on everywhere i go...

well yeah, i'm 34 so i hope to find a man to eventually settle down with...damn boy nothin like bn like...if ur not gorgeous have a nice life...LOL...i appreciate ur honesty so at least i know what i'm up against...well ppl have compared me to the likes of demi moore, courtney cox and nelly furtado...i don't see the resemblances, but hey i'll take the compliment...it's very flattering i think...anyways thanks for your help!

last thing, what areas are safe to live in that are still close to Manhattan? I was looking in Queens, what's decent there?

Astoria in Queens would be fine for a legal secretary. Easy commute to midtown.

If you budget and use a broker, a $1500 studio in Midtown East (or West) is possible. Walk to work and easy access to downtown nightlife.

There are plenty of men in Manhattan. Rich, good-looking, you name it. You won't have a problem finding one unless you're uptight or have some desire to be perpetually single. Why are you still single if you get hit on everywhere?

I am a 32-year old man happily in a relationship with someone who is normal as a result of living 200 miles from Manhattan. I will be sure to tell all my friends who spend their evenings getting treated like dirt by every woman they look at in New York that "competition for good men in NY is fierce amongst young women."

I sometimes think the problem here is that too many women are defining "good men" in a ridiculous way, and many wind up hurt when they all chase the same 3% of the population, who are generally the phoniest of guys and so spoiled by all the attention that they have little incentive but to play the field and fool around.

Thanks, I've heard Astoria Queens is a good place, what about in Brooklyn? I heard Brooklyn is a very close comparison to Chicago....is that true? Also what about Sunnyside, Woodside and Jamaica Queens?

I"m single b/c i just broke up w/my fiance about 6 months ago relocated to Florida to start new and for a change of scenery, but there is NO WORK here and i already miss city life, but want to try something new, don't want to go back to Chicago so figured I'd try NY....and so far i've dealt with some real jerk guys that haven't worked out for me....and I'm a very reasonable, understanding person..it just so happened i came across a few guys that liked to play the field and were dating another girl unbeknownst to muah...which sucks!

i'll try and look my best when i go to NY, i'm sure i'll b okay and find SOME MAN for myself....hopefully...
