You're right. It gained more people than Virginia numerically. SC is growing like a wildfire now. Especially on the coast.

This is a great question and I really don't know a good answer. Tennessee is always a favorite travel destination so maybe it started with tourism, but don't really know.

It is amazing to see how well Tennessee is doing considering how landlocked it is compared to coastal Southern States. Kentucky and Missouri are not doing well in comparison to Tennessee.

Tennessee is growing, but the lion's share of the state's growth is in the central part of the state. Nashville is growing like crazy, but the state's other large metro areas are either experiencing modest growth (Knoxville and Chattanooga) or are in a slump (Memphis and the Tri Cities). In the case of Memphis, if it weren't for its Mississippi suburbs the metro area would be losing population. In the case of the Tri Cities, only Johnson City is experiencing some growth, and it's very modest at best. The Kingsport-Bristol area is hemorrhaging population at a startling rate. And while central Chattanooga is experiencing a mini-boom of cool urban growth, the rest of the area isn't doing much.

So, in a nutshell, the midstate is growing at a brisk pace (Nashville, Clarksville, Cookeville), East Tennessee is experiencing very modest growth (Knoxville, Chattanooga, Tri Cities, Cleveland, Morristown), and West Tennessee is stagnant or even shrinking (Memphis, Jackson, Northwest Tennessee).

As I see it, other than the central part of Tennessee, I don't know that there's much growth in Tennessee that its bordering states would envy.

I don't think it is the Atlantic that is the magic formula but being landlocked does matter. Tennessee really does buck the trend in that regard.

As other people have mentioned, South Carolina is actually experiencing good growth it just is being underrated because its neighbors are also doing well. It also is coming up from a much lower base with a smaller population and all.

But I would say that the problem states in the south really are Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

Missouri and Kentucky probably have a terrible location being towards the interior which just isn't as hot as being near a cost. (Arkansas has the problem too, but it isn't so far away. And Fayetteville is doing fine)

In the day and age of the city where almost all of the growth is, the places that are not growing simply do not have any vibrant cities that people want to go to. The other places that are doing well do. (The Texas Triangle, Miami, Raleigh, Charlotte, ATL etc.) Tennessee is doing well because it has Nashville. So if anything states, don't matter as a whole nearly as much as cities.
