To be clear, I am not asking the following:

-Which city produces the most hip hop today
-Which city has hip hop as a more significant part of its culture
-Which city has hip hop as a more significant part of its identity ("NYC is known for many things while Atlanta is known more for hip hop")
-Which city has the hottest artists

I'm asking which city is more famous for hip hop around the world. I figured it was an interesting question considering that the NY scene is past its prime while the same doesn't appear to be true for Atlanta's.

Atlanta is bigger now but NYC is still more famous for the music worldwide...NYC had a couple decades long head start to clam the music as its own and that is hard for Atlanta to overcome in the time that it has been number one

-Atlanta produces the most hip-hop, and it's not even close.
-Hip-hop culture historically goes to NYC; in today's world, I'd lean towards Atlanta
-Currently Atlanta has a more significant hip-hop culture
-Atlanta has the hottest artist currently without question

If this was 1997 I'd say NYC without a doubt, but in 2017 Atlanta runs hip-hop, and has been doing so for most of the century. Pretty impressive.

Worldwide?

New York City, without a doubt. LA being second. People rarely recognize Atlanta overseas when I tell them I am from there(actually about an hour and a half away). I usually say "Coca Cola" and they understand that.

We're talking about Hip-hop. No way that NYC logically wins this argument in 2017. Atlanta has too much fire power.

NYC wins it rather easily Boss. Atlanta is in a life and death battle with LA for second place but I think it wins there. If the question was which city is more famous for hip hop among the younger "urban" crowd, Atlanta wins going away. But its worldwide meaning everybody. This means the crossover crowd and people who don't even listen to hip hop. There is a generation of old people who consider hip hop a New York thing. Also, remember hip hop is not as big as it once was. Its still huge but nothing nowadays compares to the buzz Snoop and 50 Cent had for their upcoming signature albums.

Bajan was careful in his post to state what he was talking about because he knew Atlanta would win without those instructions. Atlanta is clearly bigger than NYC today. There is no way Atlanta beats NYC in this very specific metric though.

There are more younger people into hip-hop right now than older people. Also, with social media in this day in age, which wasn't a thing during NYC's reign, Atlanta artist are can get worldwide attention almost instantly. NYC birthed hip-hop, but NYC no longer runs hip-hop, and hasn't ran hip-hop for over a decade now. You can go a whole day and not hear a NYC rapper on the radio unless they're doing a throwback hour (usually around noon). That's literally impossible with an Atlanta artist. If you turn to vh1, same deal. Atlanta is a Juggernaut. I remember going to NYC in the 90s, and it felt like hiphop, but today, it feels lost. Atlanta feels like hiphop.

To be completely honest, one issue that I hear, and have said myself, is that NYC doesn't set the hip-hop trends anymore; Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, LA set the trends. NYC just seems outdated in comparison-- kinda frozen in time.
