Which is the more beautiful town?

Which has the better weather?

Which has the more friendly people?

Which has the lower cost of living?

Which has the better economy?

Which has the better location?

Which is more liberal?

Which is more dominated by the local university?

Which has more to do?

Which has the better restaurants?

Which is better for a sports fan?

Which has the better looking women?

Which is better for someone over the age of 35?

Which one has the more true 4 seasons of weather?

Well there's no question about which one gets true 4 seasons. Madison temperatures vary by up to 130 degrees in any given year.

As for sports, Madison of course has Big Ten football and basketball, plus UW hockey is a pretty big deal too, there's a minor league baseball team in town, and it's an hour away from Brewers/Bucks, and 2.5 hours away from Cubs/Sox/Bears/Bulls/Blackhawks/Packers.

I've never been to Charlottesville but I'd wager it's more dominated by the university since Madison also doubles as the state capital, so as a city it has a "double focus" if you will.

I'd go with C'ville for warmer winters and close to mountains, closer to beach.

Actually Madison has beaches in closer proximity than Charlottesville. VA Beach is about 2-3 hours from Charlottesville while North Beach and the beach at Kohler-Andrae State Park are about 2 hours from Madison. Charlottesville definitely has warmer winters and closer proximity to the mountains though.

According to the "rules" Great Lake beaches don't count.
