Hello everybody, i'm just curious about populations in cities downtowns. I'm doing this mainly for curiosity (as stated before) and also for future research projects for college. Other stats besides population would be employees, college/university populations, daytime populations, etc... In cities I've lived in, the largest downtown have been
2. Montreal, pop. 100,000, daytime pop 600,000+, jobs ~360,000, University/College pop. 85,000
3. Miami, pop. 46,847 (Brickell +CBD, citizens as well as I don't consider A&E district/Wynwood downtown). daytime pop, 220,000. jobs? University/college students, ?
Also i would like to keep discussions on a civil level, and to give as much information not only for me but for all. I look forward to learning more about other cities downtowns
New York City(Manhattan)
New York County (Manhattan)
Total resident population 1,644,518
Total workers working in the area 2,089,922
Total workers living in the area 753,114
Estimated daytime population 2,874,000
Student population 250,000
Jobs 700,000+
These daytime population counts do not account for other visitors (these would include tourists, business persons on one-time visits, hospital visitors, theater-goers from the suburbs, etc.). Based on tourism and hospital visit statistics, I think that you could reasonably add another 100,000 people to the average weekday daytime population; possibly more on certain days.

Just like to point out that Montreal's # were from 2011, its projected to be at 120,000 as of 2015/2016.
Population: Greater Downtown (includes Back Bay, Bay Village, Chinatown, Leather District, Downtown, Government Center, and Bulfinch Triangle/ West End) 37,507
Official Downtown: 16,298 in 2010.
Daytime Estimate: an additional 500,000+ people in the greater downtown area plus tourists and business travelers.
Jobs: could only find stats for the whole city- over 650,000 jobs in the whole city

Atlanta, Downtown Proper
Area: 3 square miles
Full time Residential population: 26,700
Office workers: 173,000
Georgia State University (mainly a commuter school): 32,000
Daytime population: ~230,000
Downtown also hosts a huge tourist area (Conference center, Olympic Park, Civil Rights Museum, College Football museum, pro sports stadiums) that can boost the daytime population by 100,000 to 200,000 on average and several hundred thousand more if there is a special event going on.
"Downtown" is a trickier thing as adjacent to Downtown is the Midtown district which has the following stats.
Area: 1.4 square miles
Full time Residential population: 41,681
Office workers: 81,418
Georgia Institute of Technology: 25,017
Daytime population: ~148,000
I bring this up as officially the city counts Downtown and Midtown as one entity called Central Atlanta. This area would be approximately 5 square miles and has a daytime population of 378,000.

Not calling you out here, but it's always been odd to me how people think of ALL of Manhattan as being "Downtown" when it's really just the part of Manhattan south of Houston Street. This isn't without precedence or reality though since Manhattan is the central point for the five boroughs.

1. 14th St is the traditional divide for "downtown", not Houston.
2. Downtown in Manhattan refers to, just that, "down", and does not mean the same as "downtown" in other cities.
3. I would consider UES and UWS as "downtown" by other cities definitions, anything north of the park I would exclude.
Downtown Detroit is generally defined as the freeway loop within I-375, I-75, M-10, and the Detroit River, totaling 1 square mile.
Greater Downtown includes several adjacent high density neighborhoods, totaling 7.2 square miles.
Downtown Detroit residential population: 5,296
Greater Downtown residential population: 35,037
Student population: 29,412
*as of 2012
Downtown Detroit employee population: 66,489
Greater Downtown employee population: 134,401
*as of 2011
